I've tried Jasons technique of using a colored gel on the background. I had good results with a Primary Red and a Primary Green, but when I tried a much lighter color like a lavender, it was pretty much non existance. . . Is it a matter of more light power or moving the light closer to the background? What ajustments should I make on these less intense colors? Thanks.

assuming you are working with manual light settings, are you metering the BG light with the gel on? different gels have different difusion, or suck the power out of the light. a light gel may be blown out and the color lost...?

What color is your background to start with? You'll have best luck with black.

Make sure you keep all other light off the BG...

Try just the opposite. Less light = more color. Reduce power or move the light further away. Watch for spill from your other lights since the more subtle colors will wash out easier.

I thought I read that gray is actually the best BG for color gels.

A dark background > grey background > white background...
will show any gelled light as more saturated for a given exposure.

Exposure controls the brightness, the b/g shade controls the saturation.
