I just got a great B&W filter for my 17-40.

Maybe the same filter would work for you?

Thank you.. what is the best B+W Filter? is it the "B+W MRC UV" ? or are there better ones out there? What size would I need to get for my 24-70mm L Lens? Many Thanks.

You don't really need a filter for "protection" in my opinion, but you should get in the habit of using the supplied lens hood any time the lens is out of the case.

A UV filter will do nothing at all to enhance your images, but using a cheap one will definitely be risking problems with your images.

A high quality multicoated "circular" (as opposed to "linear") polarizing filter would be a good addition to your kit. It would allow you to cut through reflections on non-metallic surfaces (such as water, glass, paint, etc.) and darken blue skies.

Thank you.. thats actually what I want it for.. "to cut through reflections on non-metallic surfaces (such as water, glass, paint, etc.) and darken blue skies"... which filter would you reccomend?

Many Thanks..

I would get a high-end multicoated Hoya, B&H, or Heliopan filter.

Check out this thread from the forum "stickies" for some specifics about filter quality. The thread is about "protective" filter use, but the same quality issues apply.

I agree with Skip, no filter other than a CPL. The 24-70 has a particularly well designed hood for protection and flare at al focal points.

The Heliopans and B+W CPL will be thick (by 1 mm) than the Hoya so may physically vignette more at 24mm end. Today, both are slightly better than the Hoya. You can get the "slim line" versions, but then you cannot use the regular lens cap.

With any definately get the "MultiCoated" version....if it does not have that listed do not assume it is.

The B+W MRC UV is what I use on all my lenses. It isn't, however, going to help with reflections and glare. For that, you need a good polarizer. I use the B+W MRC multicoated circular polarizers (instead of, not on top of, the UV filter) for that purpose. But Hoya S-HMC or Heliopan SH-PMC circular polarizers are also good quality.

I will second all of this! I use the same filters on all of my lenses. B+W MRC F-Pro.
