I have recently purchased a Canon Rebel XTI I have been using
my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens that I had from my 35mm Rebel with it. If someone could help with with the photo I have attached and maybe have some tips as I get a number of pictures that look like this. The photo just doesn't look sharp. I usually use my camera at auto races as a hobby.Since I am in the stands I usually use the 300 mm zoom. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

The shutter speed--1/1600th--seems more than adaquate to freeze the action. But I don't think that's the problem. You'll note that everything in the frame is soft, going fast or standing still. Have you noted auto-focus or focus problems with the lens under any other circumstances?

Question: Is this a crop or the original?

The photo is not a crop. i have only had the camera for a couple of weeks, but I have had the zoom lens for a number of years and have just started using it again. One of the reasons I did not use my 35mm Rebel much was the pictures I took, a number of them seemed soft also. I have a number of photos that I took along with this one that came out fine. But I do not know if it is something I am doing wrong or if it is time for a new lens

Thanks

As nothing in the frame is in focus it would appear the lens is having trouble with auto focus. There may be something you could do to have the lens recalibrated. You might try taking a few pictures with another lens as well and compare results to see if you can narrow the problem down to the lens in question. Sorry I can't be of more help, but it seems you're doing everything you are supposed to in terms of exposure. The one thing you might try in that regard is to stop the lens down a bit--say to f9--to see if a deeper DOF might help identify the problem.

Well, if some of the pics are coming out fine as you say, it would seem that the lens is probably OK.

To test it, just take it out and point it at things and see if it focuses on them properly, you can see this in the viewfinder. Make sure you have selected a single AF point, so that you know what it should be focusing on.

If the lens seems to be OK, I would think about everything you are doing and see if you can find something that is causing this. It could be something very simple.

Some suggestions:

Are you using 'one-shot' focus, rather than AI servo, and part pressing the shutter and then following the car a bit before taking the shot? This will lock the focus at the longer distance, say the start of pit lane, so it will be out of focus when it passes in front of you.

Are you holding the lens by the focus ring and inadvertently adjusting focus manually slightly, without realising it?

In AI servo, the lens can briefly try and focus on something nearer (like a PA speaker on your side of the track) as you pan past it. This can then take a fraction of a second to get a lock back on the car, causing it to be out of focus if you shoot while it is still regaining focus. For example, I have sequences shot at airshows of planes doing a low flyby and can get two shots of a sharp plane, one of an oof head, one of an oof plane (as the AF recovers and heads back where it should be) then sharp plane again as the servo locks back on. If you are tracking the car in AI servo and have just passed a 'head' before you take your shot, that could cause this problem.

Hope you get this sorted out.

This all makes good sense to me. I've never shot anything in AI servo before but the some good/some bad pattern sounds a lot like what sandpiper is describing. Maybe practice and a little more self awareness is what needs to happen to solve your problem. That sounds much better than having to send your lens off to be fixed anyway:D

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will go to our local stock car track this weekend and work on my focusing Here is another picture I took the same day and it seems to look better so it must be something I am doing wrong

Thanks
