Re: the 6 months thing. No, it's not to protect my gear (anyhow, i don't have any authorization to go down there. It is the first time they are doing an experiment where the radioactive dose is lethal if you enter at the wrong moment...

:p That is the joke. The Crazed photographer who enters the lethal radiation area with a single thought in mind: "I hope this is not affecting my Camera gear". :)

Well, maybe he can get some real once in a lifetime (deathtime) shots!

This is awesome! I've been following the progress of several of CERN's experiments for some time now - the CMS included. Of all the blogs that I read and photos I've seen, I've always wondered one thing... What does the place smell like?

Is it the odor of coffee and Chinese food?

Thanks Micah!

To answer your question, there is no particular odor (that I could make out at least...)

Great shots! Reminds me of my days (nights) at Argonne National Labs and working with their linear accelerator.

All those accelerators are quite tremendous pieces of enigineering...

When they flip the switch on that sucker, I intend to have three things readily available:
- Good Scotch
- Good Cigar
- Good Woman

Just in case... ;)

Very nice series, btw!
