Silly question I know ... but how do you set RAW on the G9

I bought my wife a G9 a few weeks back. I kept telling her that the best results will always be if she sets it at RAW. I also got her a 16GB card so that she could set it as RAW and Super Fine simultaneously ... this is the setting I use for my 40D since large pictures are not a problem with memory cards being so cheap. The thing is that I went through the manual and I see a RAW setting in the manual ... but I can't get that setting on the camera !!!??? I get Super Fine then an option for 12mb or an option for W ... but no RAW after the "W". Is the Super Fine option with the 12mb actually RAW? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SuperFine is not RAW, but just the resolution (megapixels) in which the image is recorded. Ermm.. I don't have the camera here with me, but I think you'll need it to be in M (Manual) setting, then try getting to the "RAW" setting after "W" in the same area that you are looking in.

You can not select RAW in AUTO, SCN or Panorama (stitch assist) modes
Set your camera to M, Tv, Av or P modes in order to shot RAW images.
Also be sure to set RAW+jpg on the record menu AND select RAW with the func. button
Check page 81 of the Camera user guide for details.
Be aware that you use the vertical arrows to select L and the horizontal arrows to select RAW

I don't have a G9, it's coming this week, but I'm sure the Superfine setting relates to the JPG compression rate, I.e Large | Superfine would be the largest resolution and least file compression.
Thats how I understand it for any other cameras.

Just with shooting in RAW and JPEG though, I dont think it's needed. RAW alone is fine as I don't use the JPEG if I have the RAW

When shooting raw+jpg with the G9, you don't have the option to set the jpg compression. The jpg file will be 4000x3000 pixels based on the "fine", not superfine, compression.

Thank you ... my wife left already on a trip and so I guess she will have to do with Super Fine. I should have guessed that RAW would only show up in non AUTO mode, although I really don't see why Canon has configured it that way. Personally I only shoot RAW but for my wife I think it is good to have the JPEG option as well since she still hasn't played around with developing the RAW images through software. I had shown her a picture of a dove I had taken in RAW at ISO 640 and she was blown away by how much better it was than the JPEG version and really wanted that option.

I think Canon figure that if you don't know what settings to use in Manual, then you certainly won't bother with RAW. Fair enough, if you ask me.

Why not have her try Program mode which still gives you RAW functionality with much of it being automated like full auto mode? Seems you get the best of both worlds there.
