It cuts the amount of light going to the camera without altering the colors. One way people use this is when they want to use a large aperture and a slower shutter speed in strong light.

There are different versions, too.
INFO - LEE Filters GND and ND - Or any filter like these

FrankC - 20D, RAW, Manual everything...
