Yesterday I was bumming around in different stores looking at photo equipment when I ran into a display of Sandisk compact flash cards. The store was a Best Buys store.
They had the Ultra III 30mb. Professional cards. I was looking to find an 8 gig. card for an up coming trip to Sitka, Alaska. The price on the 8 gig. cards is astronomical every place I looked.
Well, the 8 gig Ultra III's were $169 each. Right beside them was a peg that held 4 gig. Ultra III's and I was amazed to see the price! $49 each.:eek::eek:

I happily grabbed the remaining 3 cards that remained on the peg! :) I got 3 4gig. 30 mb per second Professional cards for less than I would have paid for a single 8 gig. card!:)

So, if you happen to have a Best Buy Store in your neighborhood and you need another compact flash card; you had best rush down to the store to see if you can save some Big Bucks! :)

I prefer the 4GB size (on anything less than a 1Ds anyway) as they easily hold several hundred images each (400+ RAW on a 1D2N) and I'd rather split my images up over multiple cards than "put them all in the same basket" so to speak. If your single, huge card fails or gets lost you're hosed. At least with multiple cards you have a greater chance of keeping most of your images.

Just picked up 2 133x Kingston for $20 so I'm good for now. I think they're still on sale too for less than $30 but not $20

We were saying this when 4 GB cards were really expensive. People were saying to use all 1 GB cards for this exact reason. I guess we'll be saying to not have more than 8GB size cards in a year or two. :)

Probably, LOL... But on the flipside, camera resolution (file size) is also steadily increasing.

Yeah. If I was shooting with the 1DS then I would definitely go 8GB because 8-10mp allows for the size of the card times 100. 4GB=400 shots in RAW etc.

A 5D, maybe 1 8GB card but I' still shoot with 4GB normally, I could deal with just less than 400 shots.

Canon data I/O is somewhat constipated compared to the Nikon! You will get little benefit from Extreme IV in an Canon, compared to Extreme III -- must more cost-effective memory for a Canon

The sentence in my post you quoted was an interrogative statement, not a declarative. ;) In other words, I was asking the OP if the wording on the card says "Ultra III" or "Extreme III" because he said that it just said "Extreme III" on the box yet he referred to the cards as Ultra III.

Actually, I bought larger Ultra IIs for my 30D for this exact reason; for my shooting style and camera, there's very little benefit for the Extreme III over the Ultra II, and the Ultra II is twice the size for the same price (I got a pair of 4G ultra IIs for ~$75 on sale a couple weeks ago, and a pair of 2G extreme IIIs would have been roughly the same amount).

There was a blurb about it on dpreview but I can't seem to locate it now.

Yes, that's a very good idea. When you are in POTN you should never let trivial things, such as work, distract you. ;) :p
