I have 11 external hard drives, 9 are desktop drives and 2 are portable. My current favorite is the Seagate Free Agent line. They don't have fans so they run nearly silent. They do get pretty warm though... and the design is really "modern" looking so if aesthetics are important, this may not be your drive.

If you can afford it and have the right ports, I recommend going with Firewire over USB. From personal experience, I can say that there is a noticeable speed difference between the two in practical usage. I have no eSATA experience though.

You should automaticly have one, so you sont loose all your information. I have a 350GB MYBOOK. I have had an issue only once, but I had another backup of a backup so I would not loose everything.

I have a Free agent USB, and a western digital MyBook Firewire, and the mybook, is WAY faster due to the firewire.

I have a My book 1/TB and 500/GB...Love em, cheap, fairly fast (firewire) and inexpensive. But Ed's suggestion also gets very very good reviews.

Another option would be to add more internal drives. I use three currently, plus backup to external drives.
