Dom, I don't want to get into that debate on the lens forum because anyone who's bought version II over there will say it's TONS better. But I don't agree...and I don't feel the need to validate my purchase so I'll just tell you what I think over here.

I own version II. It is NOT as sharp a lens as the 17-40 was wide open. If it's tons better than the 16-35 version 1, then the version one must have been terrible indeed (which I don't believe). It's got soft corners wide open...so did version one. Bascially I can't figure out the difference btw. 1 & 2...it was supposed to be a huge difference but I just don't see that born out in IQ. I don't know about the focus speed or anything...

I feel I may have opened a can of worms bnut i really need to know
I have worked with the 17-35 and that was stunning and i need a short zoom (trying to work with a less than ideal 20mm prime is anoying)
I just cant see from the tec details if the improvement is a noticeable one on anything but the charts and tests

I don't want you to think I don't use mine because I do...a lot. But I don't know if the IQ of version II is worth $600+USD more than version 1. I feel the same about the 85L. Not enough difference in the new one vs. the old to merit the huge price canon is charging for version 2.

hmmmm
food for thought
done a bit more poking round on the internet (as you do) and the consensus apears to be that for a cropped bod save the cash and go for the mk1
