done a bit more poking round on the internet (as you do) and the consensus apears to be that for a cropped bod save the cash and go for the mk1

As with most wide angle lenses, performance at the edges is the hardest to achieve. I believe the Mk II offers some improvement there, but is probably wasted on a crop body. I'm sure the Mk I would be just fine.
