GMAE folks....

I was at a wedding this weekend, taking snaps of my friends with the G9 (as you do), when one of the people on the table (a new GF of one of my friends) said "don't you think it's rude to take photos of people without them knowing?".

I was going to point out that it's a wedding, that's what people do. But tact took the better of me and I put the camera down on the table again (with an audible thunk).

Some people, eh?

I would have taken her picture and kept on going, but that is just me.

Is the 135 sf 2.8? I've heard great things about that lens (if you turn off the soft focus)

Yes. There is a pretty good review of it in the archives and it seems to get decent mention when talked about.

OK Tupper P&S owners -- My parents are making a once in a lifetime trip to China this fall. My mom would like to replace her current P&S camera with something nicer and more reliable.

Ease of use, ease of visibility (no itty-bitty buttons, please), and image quality are priorities. Post-processing is not in their vocabulary.

What would you recommend and why?

I'll say that the S5IS, while the camera of professionals, is bigger than what she'd want. I have checked out the G9 casually in a couple of stores and have been impressed by its ergonomics. It's also rumored to be on the "to be replaced" list which could make it a great deal in the not so distant future.

I've been happy with my G9. I have no experience of the S5 though.

I would got with one of the A series. Easy to use and the buttons are fairly good sized. The image quality is pretty good in my opinion.

And a plus for traveling is that they use AA batteries and still aren't too huge, but have a good handhold too.

I'd say the G9. Put it on green box and go.

this is a green box mode shot...no joke

IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p73438391-4.jpg

I consistently get shots like that with that camera. It's slightly noisy but no more so than other P&S...I'd highly recommend it.

I've owned the

a620,
s3-is
panasonic TZ1
and had access to the G5

I like this by far the best (followed by the S3).

Seeing the G9 is discontinued, I'd go for the G10. Supposed to be extra SWEET!

When I sent my 20D in...it had been back in my hands for two days before it said that it had shipped.

Hey Riley - have you seen that "Canon Loyalty" program for trading in your A-series P&S get upgrading it to a new one? (for a small fee)

Thanks, all. Anyone else is welcome to chime in, too.

I did see the a590 (I think) in a Best Buy this morning, and thought that the ergonomics of that might work for them, too. Didn't really think about the battery thing, but you've got a great point there, Riley.

As for the g10/g9 issue -- for their needs a lower priced g9 would be more valuable than a higher priced g10 with features they wouldn't use.

Their trip isn't until November, but my Mom's got a birthday between now and then, plus their anniversary at the end of November (My Dad says he's taking my Mom to China for their 40th Anniversary. For their 50th, he's going to go back and bring her home. ;) ), so there are some gift giving opportunites, too.

I still have dial-up too....for the same reasons. Still lots of places where broadband is non-existent.

Nope ditched dial-up when I got broadband...

reneethomas wrote in post #6129806 (external link)
All you need is a Palm Treo with Verizon wireless broadband. We have not been too many places where you could not get broadband. We even had it in Upham this weekend which is in the middle of absolutely nowhere with washed out roads and everything.

There's loads and loads of places here where one can't even get a handheld GPS unit to work.... much less a cell phone....

Around here, no one can touch US Cellular's clarity and coverage....but my entire family is on Verizon....and since I talk to them more than anyone else...made sense for me to switch...

And I still disagree with that statement.... I had much more cell coverage in the 27 counties of WNC than any of my US Cell co-workers.... My family is all verizon too as are about 90% of my friends!

GROAN!!!

Exactly why we gave up our Motorolas and got the LG eNVY. We do a lot more texting because the full keyboard makes it much easier. I'm not thrilled with the call quality or the bluetooth, but by the time we're ready to switch again there will be something better available.

Here ya go... I call it the "No Phone." No camera, no internet, no e-mail, no music, no games, etc., etc.

http://www.engadgetmobile.com …mple-wireless-coupe-flip/ (external link)

I'd like the LG eNVY but I have my eyes on something different next time....

Campgrounds here are slowly adding WiFi....but the progress is less than impressive...plus a lot of places in this part of Oregon have locked down their WiFi access.

No kidding... rarely is it free.... Although if you want to park on the streets of Downtown Asheville... they'll give it to ya for free... kinda cool.
