I am going to get the 40D this Friday to take advantage of the $200 savings.
However, there are three options that are available.
1. The body only.
2. The body plus the 28-135 IS. An additional $200.
3. The body plus 17-85 IS, Bag and extra Battery. Additional $300.

I currently have the 17-85 IS on my XTi which I am going to keep as a back up and whenever I do not want to carry extra weight.
I could keep the original 17-85 on the XTi, and keep the new 17-85 on the 40D.
I also have the original kit lens 18-55 and the 18-55 USM.

The 28-135 lens. Is it wide enough ?
I still have the 28-90 from my old Rebel 2000.
Other lenses are listed below in signature.

Or save the money and go body only?

Any 40D users, I am all ears.
I thank you for your time.

I didn't even know there was an 18-55 USM. To see if the 28-135 is wide enough, just set one of your zooms to 28mm and see if that'll suffice. You may also specify what you're shooting to help answer your question. IMHO, I think you should just go body only and save up.

Sounds like you have a good zoom range already covered. What about body only and a 28 to 35 prime to round out that collection? You already have 3 lenses covering the 17-85 range so my vote is for a prime instead.

Go for the body only and build your lens collection over the time.

Body only. You know how the lenses work already so start getting your head around the 40D. Then slowly upgrade your lens kit

Why not get the body and 28-135? You can try the lens out and see if you like it, and if not, sell it. You'll easily get more than the $200 difference for it. The only downside at all is the minor hassle of selling the lens.

i agree with prime80. get the 28-135, and if you don't like it you can easily get more than 200 for it. but if you don't want to go through the hassle of selling the lens then just get the body only.

Get the 28-135, it's a bargain when it's included in the kit. You have to buy the lens hood separately, though.
As you already have the 17-85, I don't see the point of having two of them. You can move them from one camera to the other, if you like. So at those times when the 28 isn't wide enough, put the 17-85 on there, and vice versa.

You can look at just a few images I took with that lens, and some other lenses, if you look here (external link). Picasaweb doesn't retain lens information in the exif data, but I've included that in the image bylines.
