Whooo!!! Sold my 5D and BG-E4 last week and just placed my order for a 1DS Mark III!! I will be here on Thursday thanks to my 2day shipping upgrade. Is there anything I should focus on learning with this new camera? I have never had a 1 series before but had the Rebel to 20D to 30D to 40D to 5D transition. Just wondering what I should learn about specifically before I take it on any assignments. I just got the 16-35mm f/2.8L II to go with it and it looks as if I am going to get the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS this weekend. Eventually I would like to get the 24-70mm f/2.8L and the 85mm f/1.2L. I am so excited!!!!

It's a HUGE step up from the 5D with regards to image quality, color, etc. You'll get used to it!

Judging from the landscapes on your website, it looks like you'll put it to good use. Congrats.

Hahaha, sold my car and put some of the money towards it. That helped.

It has a lot more high iso noise than your 5D. At 100%, it looks comparable to my old 10D at 1600 and 3200. It's not the best high iso performer... the 1D mark III is the true high iso champ. Just letting you know so you're not surprised or disappointed.

Having both a 5D and a 1DS3 myself, you will absolutely fall in love with the camera all over again. The noise on the 1DS3 is less noticeable than the 5D because of the higher resolution.

Start Training

Suggest you get in training - it's really heavy after almost anything else and you'll need a strong right arm. I found a stretchy neoprene strap helped a lot too.

Great camera. Have fun

Hi there,

You lucky sod - i'm envious. That aside if it is not too obvious I would spend a good hour or two reading the manual on the more important bits.

I am sure you won't have a problem and as others have said you will enjoy it - just take your time to get used to it, and then you will get the best out of the beast.

Enjoy !!!!!!

Mark

Congrats!

My advice if you are new to 1 series cameras is to be prepared to go through a bit of a learning curve to get the most out of them - particularly the AF. Experiment with the AF and custom settings to come up with the settings/technique that best suit your style.

You'll love it!
