I am a beginner at conversion and processing, recently got my 40D and love it. Took my first raw images to a friend with Capture pro and it did not recognize them although he uses a 1D Canon. Then he downloaded an update and that worked. I downloaded Raw Shooter Essentials 2006 and it also does not support my raw files. The processer that comes with the camera is very limited. I know Adobe bought out Rawshooter and is utilizing some of it in their programs. Does any one know a good software for processing 40D RAW that does not cost an arm and a leg? Sorry I don't know all the terminology yet. Just learning.

DPP comes with your camera, try that.

Don't mention what software you already have, but if you have Photoshop Elements (5 on up) you get ACR with it (just need to download updates for it to work.) [It lists for $99, but I got v6 on sale at costco for $60]

If you, or anyone in your household is a student, you could qualify for student pricing of Adobe products... Lightroom, for example is $299, but only $99 US at student pricing. (Although version 2 is likely to be out shortly... so I wouldn't jump into buying right away... there are trial versions, and beta for V2 however.)

I personally think DPP does a respectable job and I used it for awhile with good results... but also was pleased with RawTherappe in the limited experience I have with it.

What exactly is he updating? RawShooter Essentials in no longer being developed and that's the only software he mentioned having.

Another option that will cost you nothing is to download and use Adobe DNG converter. http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ (external link). It's an extra step to convert your RAW file and DNG format, but it runs in batch, so it's pretty fast.

Thanks for all the input. I was unclear in my original message. I do have DPP, it came with the camera, but I would like a more powerful and flexible program. I will probably save up for CS3 and go from there. Thanks a lot. When I get a little more experience, I will be able to ask more intelligent questions. It is really nice to have a pool of experience to draw from
