Brand new 40D owner here and I am going through the manual trying different settings. I can not get the camera to shoot the 3 shot exposures. I keep re-reading the manual to no avail. I am missing somehting easy I am sure. So if someone can give me a step by step I would appreciate it.

Thanks, John

The best thing you can do is to buy a book such as this (keep in mind that this is not the only one, just the one I have): "Canon EOS 40D Guide To Digital SLR Photography" by David D. Bush.

The easiest way:

1. Press the Menu button, and look at the screen (notice the small icons or pictures on the top of the screen).

2. Rotate the Main Dial (by the shutter button) so that the second picture, from left to right, is selected.

3. Now, rotate the Quick Control Dial (next to the Menu screen), down/up to AEB, and then press the "Set" button (located right in the center of the Quick Control Dial)

4. Rotate the same Quick Control Dial to the desired f/stop you want. You will notice how the dots spread from zero (center). At the beginning you will see three dots next to each other. That means that the 3 exposures will be spread out through one f/stop. If you separate the dots further, that produces a wider range between exposures.

5. Press the Set button, and then exit by pressing the Menu button.

You can set the camera to take the three photos for you: Use the self timer, and the camera will automatically take three photos for you after the time delay.

Or, use the single shooting mode and take three photos by pressing the shutter button three times.

You must go back to the Menu and cancel bracketing (AEB) when not longer needed.

To cut the long story short, set Drive mode to Continuous shooting and you’ll have 3 shots with one press on the shutter.

After that, re-read the shaded footnote on page 94 of the Instruction Manual.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Thanks much for the help. It worked like a charm. The book will be ordered today.

I have the opposite problem - my AEB is set to bracketing - not sure how that happened - and for some reason I can't turn it off - any ideas?

In the Custom Functions menu - turn AEB off.

It's not in the Custom functions menu. It's in the shooting menu (red).
