I've been hearing a lot about shutter remotes/release/remote switch.

What's the difference? And what's a good, simple one to get to trigger the shutter?

It depends on what you want to achieve really.

If you want the shutter release to simply trigger the camera while it's on a tripod to avoid camera shake, or to do bulb exposures without having to hold the shutter button with your finger, pretty much any simple wired shutter release will suit your needs. It's usually just a button with a wire, so you can't go wrong with any of them. I got mine off e-bay for about $10 and it does the job perfectly.

There are also more elaborate options like wireless shutter releases, ones with timers, etc.. but I have very limited experience with those.

If you have an xD or xxD series canon, you have a terminal in the body to connect the release to. I am not sure about the xxxd bodies.

On the left, where the USB cable connects you have the terminal.

From the canon website

Shutter

Remote Control
Remote control with Remote Switch RS-60E3 or Wireless Remote Controllers RC-1/RC-5

There is a connector on your camera body somewhere (probably on the left side of your body, under a rubber gasket, that this plugs into. When you push the button, the shutter releases.

Well..... wired is the release at the end of a wire that connects to your camera. You are "connected" to your camera. Wireless has a receiver and a transmitter so that you are not required to be physically connected to the camera.

Wired release cable -
Manual = You focus in on something - say a flower - you want a lot of DOF so you are at f 16 not enough light and if you hold camera if will come out blurry / out of focus . The remote lets you take picture without shaking camera .
Auto - You tell remote to take a picture every 15 minutes and keep shutter open for 14 minutes . [Car lights , lightning]
Non - wired - built - in infer red but you have to be in front of camera with line of site to camera from remote .
Other non wired work off radio freq. . You want a kid to smile - so you do stuff - when the kid smiles you push button . Not stand looking thru finder and hoping the kid will smile .
Just keep reading this forum - someone else will say how do I and pretty soon it will make sense .
