Hi all,

I finally decided to replace my nifty with the Sigma 50 1.4 (Beach has the lowest price (external link)btw). I can't wait for it! And if it's not perfect, I wouldn't mind sending it off to Sigma.

BUT...now I'm not sure whether I should sell my 30mm. I planned to sell my 40D off, but decided to keep it around with the 30mm. The 30 vignettes pretty harshly on a FF though, so I'm thinking I should get a 28mm or 35mm because I'd like to have something compatible with both, though I'm not sure how much I'd use the ~30mm range with the 5D. The Sigma 50 might not work well because it seems a bit long for me on the 1.6 crop. I do alot of low-light with both.

Any ideas, suggestions, or convincing arguments would be really helpful!

Keep both, if you keep both bodies. Those sigma lenses are cheap when compared to bodies, and keep more of their value than cameras. I don't see a point seeing lenses, unless they sit in cabin unused, and you really need some money ;-)a

I have the 5D and the 50mm is good ... it is a bit long on the crop bodies. I supplement it with the 24mm 2.8 and 35mm 2.0. These are both cheap but high quality. My Sigma 50mm was superb from 2.8 but not below ... barely usable at 1.8 and rubbish at 1.4. I sent mine back. I am considering the Carl Zeiss 50mm 1.4 Planar ZF with a Nikon/EOS adapter. Manual focus but a lovely lens. A bit pricey though compared to the usual suspects around at this rrange.

I do like keeping a crop body because it adds more reach to the 70-200+1.4TC. That way, if I bring both cameras, I'd be covered from 24-450 (am I crazy to think this?).

If I kept the 30mm, it'll probably stay at home most of the time since I'll have the 50mm with the 5D. If I needed more speed FPS-wise, the 5D would probably stay at home.

Am I starting to sound confusing?

I have been looking at a Zeiss 50mm C/Y forever, but I'm not exactly good at manually focusing, and it would most likely require a new focus screen, which would make things darker, so I hear.

I do like the 35mm 2.0, but I'll have to research that a bit more. A 24mm 2.8 sounds intriguing too because I take a bunch of landscape shots and the extra stop would be nice.

How does the Sigma 50mm F1.4 compare to the Canon 50mm F1.4? By most accounts the Canon is superb and it's $150 cheaper than the Sigma.

How is the AF performance? I have always been disappointed with my siggy 30mm AF (FF, accuracy, etc) but when it worked I got wonderful pics.
I on the other hand did not have problems AF issues with my canon lenses.

6D + enough lenses for now.

I liked the build of the Sigma 30 so I went with their 50, as I felt that was worth the extra money. ~$50 for a hood and case and about ~$100 for a more solid construction sounds about even!

Though I was really close to getting the Canon, but I just don't like the build of it.

I don't have it yet so see these for Siggy 50 talk ;)

If/when my 50 1.4 USM dies or I get a full frame body, I may replace it with the Sigma 50 1.4 if it is really as good a lens as I've been hearing.

I recently got the 50 1.4 from Canon - and am lucky that my copy is razor sharp even at f/1.4

I also have the sigma 30 1.4 - for about 2 years and again was lucky to have a perfect copy from the get-go. I like it so much that if i had known that Sigma were bringing out a 50 1.4 of their own, I would have waited! Build quality, HSM, hood included - absolutely i would have taken the Siggie over the Canon - i can't have the L version, and the sigma EX lenses are near-L in build and image quality.

At some stage I am planning to go full-frame - perhaps when/ if the new 5D II ( or whatever) makes an appearance - but i'll keep a crop body regardless. The sigma 30 wil;l always have a home in my bag.

+3 year warranty too for the EX's! Can't afford the L one either, so the Sigma is the next best thing.

I love my 30mm too, but not in the sort of way that I'd cry if I sold it ;)

If you decide to sell your 40D, then sell off the siggy 30mm. If you plan on keeping the 40D, I would definitely hold onto it.

You will pretty much be duplicating the FOV with the 40D/30mm and 5D/50mm though. The positve to this is that if either body or lens should go down and need service you have a backup setup in the 50mm range.

I recently picked up a Sigma 30 and a Canon 85 1.8 for my yearly vacation trip to Myrtle Beach. Despite carrying all of the 5 lenses I own, the 30 never left my camera for the 1500+ shots I took in a variety of conditions. I absolutely love this lens.
