I'm unsure as to how to interpret these results from the Focus Test. Im compared my Tamron 17-50 to my 50mm 1.8 and here are what I got.

Tam Focus Chart

It looks like a little bit of front focus to me. Am I looking at this correctly?

I used a tripod, and cable shutter release. Did not use mirror lock. Manual AF point selection was set to the center.

I'm with Dredaze, the test charts don't look like they were done correctly (not centered). The spice jars look the same (both focused to the center AF.)

As yogestee asked, how does it perform shooting your normal subjects?

Here are 2 more. The focus point was on the duracell. These are both with the tamron.

The first looks fine to me but the second is hard to tell. The radio shack battery to the left looks pretty well focused. Especially the metal part at the top.

It looks like you might have been slightly off on focus leaving the duracell a little soft and giving a little more to the radioshack battery.

That seems about right on the 1st. The 2nd could be your AF point locking onto the radio shack battery (they are too close making it hard for the AF, not the lens, to figure out what you are trying to lock onto.)

Food for thought:

Quoting the post:

2. The actual focus sensor arrays are three times larger than the viewfinder marks. A user could put an intended subject in the mark, but if there is a strong detail just outside the mark (but within the sensor area), the camera would focus on that strong detail. This is a source of much of the complaints of the back- or front-focusing -- especially with the "ruler tests." Also, as far as the camera is concerned, a focus lock on anything within the sensor area is good, which sometimes covers more area than the photographer intended.

Are you shooting everyday stuff and having focus problems?

The 50 and 17-50 both seem to be front focusing slightly in equal amounts IMO. Have you considered that maybe it's in the camera (focus adjustment screw)?

If you front focus with both lenses it's most likely the body. I;d send it and the 50 to Canon for calibration.

What and where is the focus adjustment screw?

I think that your batteries are too close together. The cameras focus point is larger than it appears in the viewfinder so it is possible that is why it locked on the other battery.
