Ok this was my first try at a large group of folks. I had a 3ft X 4ft softbox without the inner diffuser in it mounted to camera right about 30 deg from center and as high as the stand would go probably 13 ft. I had an umbrella about 2 ft camera left about 1 ft below camera level.
As you can see from the photo my softbox did not fire thanks to gadget infinity firing devices. I blended 2 exposures from the raw file (thank God for Raw) to salvage the back rows being dark from the front.
My question is what do you do to avoid the large drop off of light from front to back. Even if my main light had fired it would still be darker in the back than the front.

I realize that trying to get directional lighting with a group this big might not be possible also. What do you guys do when lighting a large group in a fairly dark building.
