Folks...

What's the best way of stopping slugs get to my plants and eating them? We've heard things about bark chippings, crushed eggshells, and copper. I think copper might be ok for trees, but probably not for the smaller plants.

Any ideas?

Salt

I can't really sprinkle salt all over the garden (plus it'll dissolve the first time it rains).

Salt's ok when you're looking for them and want to kill them individually - it doesn't work too well in the middle of the night when I'm sleeping.. :D

Well, then, I'm fresh outta ideas. I've also heard that strategically placed bowls filled with beer is a good deterrent, but if you're dealing with rain too, that probably won't work either. Besides, it's a waste of beer...

Speaking of advice.

My buddy from the UK will be here in 36 days!! He's asked advice on what to bring over for the women.. My mom and wife. Any suggestions ladies?

SLUGS (Taken from here: http://www.greendealer-exotic-seeds.com/seeds/HowtoSlugs.html (external link))
There is a way to attract and poison slugs without buying the commercial stuff. Save some small flat plastic or metal jar lids, and place them on the outside of your eggshell barrier. Pour a little beer in the these containers before dark and when the slugs come out to feed, they will be attracted to the beer. They will drink the beer because of the yeast content, but the alcohol will kill them with no harm to turtles who may decide to devour the drunken, dying slugs.

Are those kid and pet safe? We wouldn't want to poison anything that we'd like to have healthy...

that's pretty cool!! We didnt' have turtles to worry about but still, what a waste of beer and it could lead to awkward conversations with the spouse too...."hey honey, I need to buy a six pack cuz I'm having the slugs over tonight" "yeah, I'm glad to see you finally realized how they act!" .

yeah, no they aren't. We didn't have pets that went outside and the kids were old enough to not mess with it.

Chocolate. Proper English chocolate. You'll be after Thornton's or the like. English chocolate is made differently to your Hershey's stuff.

Also, English Tea (if they're tea drinkers) - Whittard (external link)'s make good quality tea and coffee..
