good grief, I can't keep up with all the chattering in here. Thank you to those who commented on my first decent moon pic. I haven't figured out how to do the multi quote thingy or I would of thanked you individually. :D

I read that thread "need professional help" and all I got to say is WOW! I can't imagine wanting to get the camera she was talkin about. It'll take me forever just to figure out my 40D :) ah well to each there own I guess ;)

Hope your all having a wonderful day!!

that's a wild thread...I can't imagine going from a P&S to the top camera canon has made and NOT understanding what 24-70 (or the like) even means.

I'm not knocking newbies, soooo far from it. But shoot, it's just crazy to pour that kind of money into something you aren't even sure you will be able to use.

My thinking exactly!! I'm very very new and I was hesitant on buying the 40D and lenses I got. Since I am between jobs at the moment, I spent everyday for a month reading reading reading , before I bought my stuff. Don't know if I made the right choices or not, but I'm happy with all of it so far. And I know I won't need an upgrade for a very long time if ever. I spent more $$ than I should have , but I'm a very stubborn, determined woman and I WILL learn my gear if it kills me.

Oh! I have another question for you all! I want to attempt to take my daughters senior pics. Can I get some good waist up/full body shots that have the nice blurry (bokeh?) background, with the lenses I have? Or should I consider getting one of the 50mm primes?

Thanks Becky, but I don't know what second curtain synch is *ducks incoming bullets*. Sometimes typing a question can come over wrong because people can't hear inflections or see body language, so please don't take this question wrong. If I remember right it is at 1/40 (I don't have an EXIF view on the sales desk computer), how much slower would you suggest?

Sorry, was off looking for a wall gallery kit I saw on HGTV, apparently there is only one $349, not even a variety of other than rotating the template.

Anyway, I'm not very familar with second curtain synch except that it does something with bluring, but maybe that is only with lights, like cars at night.

I think it would look better if the colors were streaked more. KWIM?

Oh if any one is interested in what I was looking at...LINK (external link)

Your 17-55 or 100 macro should do just fine for senior portraits. You want to give yourself enough room away from her and have the background behind her far from her as well.

you can do it with the 17-55 on 2.8. To get creamy bokeh (background blur) you need to be closer to your subject with a WA lens. It won't be as creamy as a 1.2 lens but it can be nice.

I've seen creamy bokeh with the 100-400 too though...so yes, it's possible. Before you set out to do your senior photos, take those two lenses (the macro lens would work but man, I hate to have my portrait taken with a macro because it shows every flaw in the skin)...and do some practice shots...like a post or something in the yard...get close to it with your 17-55 and take some shots on 2.8 and see if you like that look and then put on the 100-400 at f5.6 and stand back only just far enough where you could get a torso shot and see what you think of the bokeh with that...if you are too far away, you don't get as nice bokeh.

Did that make sense? (I realize it was kind of rambling)

okie dokie here is my first decent (not just a bright blob in the sky) moon shot. Tell me what you think good or bad.

Great shot, glad it worked. It is fun to see people come here and improve. Everyone in here has.

Folks...

What's the best way of stopping slugs get to my plants and eating them? We've heard things about bark chippings, crushed eggshells, and copper. I think copper might be ok for trees, but probably not for the smaller plants.

Any ideas?

Crushed diatoms. That may be what slug bait is. It is non toxic and made of the crushed shells of diatoms. It slices the slugs causing them to die.

Good suggestions. I know my mom likes Tea. the wife not so much. Chocolate is a good option but we don't want to fatten our women up. I will mention both of those to him and let HIM decide though.

We should love the women no matter their size.

Another way of saying what people already told you is stand back, zoom in, use a wide apature(small f/) and make sure there is space behind the subject so the background is far enough away to be out of focus.

Your 100 will work, I use it a lot for portraits.
