100-400 @ 100 f/9 1/200 I wanted enough blur in the background to show where they were but to make the subject pop, so not exactly creamy but...

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll practice on her in a couple days. she wants me to take pics of her while she is training her 3yr old horse. So if I can get her off the horse for a few minutes I can try out all your suggestions.

Oh and Permie she has very nice clear skin so using the macro would probibly be fine?

yep the macro works great (it's only downside is a slower focusing). And if her skin is clear then you've got no worries with that one either.

Take some shots while she's riding the horse just to see the difference in bokeh you can create...if you do a 100mm on the 100-400 at 5.6 you won't get as creamy bokeh that you will on 400mm at 5.6 standing in the same place...the best thing to do is see where you like the settings and work around them (and the lens you like the best) for your shots.

both Pete and Chris have used the 100-400 for portraits (it wouldn't be my choice personally, but they create some stellar shots with it). I know wedding photogs use the 17-55 for portraits and love it. I've never used it. I prefer a soft skin look on mine so I don't use my macro but I've seen very nice portraits done with macro lenses. It's just a matter of preference.

If you want to practice estimate your distances or go to your shooting site, place an object such as a vase on a stool or post, and play with different apertures. Wide will give more blur, narrow will give you a longer depth of field or range of focus. Like Becky got a little blur at F/9 in that situation but was able to keep it sharp enough to serve the purpose of defining the setting.
Did you say horse:) Take a few pony pics and go HERE

Oh! I have another question for you all! I want to attempt to take my daughters senior pics. Can I get some good waist up/full body shots that have the nice blurry (bokeh?) background, with the lenses I have? Or should I consider getting one of the 50mm primes?

You've already gotten some great advice. :D I'm looking forward to seeing your shots.
