Is it possbile to use fill in flash get the same effect as using reflector? Let say I dont have a reflector but I wanted to lighten up the face under the shade.

You just expose for the ambient light and then adjust the flash intensity down until you just get a nice natural fill. It's easier with a light meter, but a few tries will get it right. "If you're not living on the edge. You're taking up too much room !"
