PGA Tour Event Etiquette

I was lucky enough to obtain a photographers pass for this years Canadian Open to be held at Glen Abbey GC in Oakville, ON.

This is very exciting for me as my dad used to be the assistant pro at Glen Abbey so I played there a ton as a kid.

This will be my first time covering a PGA event so I am wondering if anyone here can give me some advice/tips on proper photographers etiquette at such an event.

Oh and I got my hands on a 300 2.8 IS and 2x tele for the week of the tournament!

You'll find a wealth of experienced advice in a message thread at the Sports Shooter web site. First rule: any shutter noise that a golfer can hear, especially on the backswing, can cause you huge trouble.

You will be given a long list of "rules" when you get your press pass. There will be hundreds of photographers ... shadow some for a while. Photographing golf is a great time!

Always look at your backgrounds when looking for a spot to setup.

wear very very very comfortable shoes, can't stress that enough... and very very very comfortable clothes... preferably in the likes of the "Nike dri fit"

the advice on shadowing other pro photographers are a good idea.

when I was shooting golf, I had a buggy and unlimited access... but my feet still hurt at the end of the day... and boy did I smell too... LOL

If you don't shoot from the time the player begins to address his ball, until the ball is struck, you'll be fine. That is one of the most important rules.

Thanks for the replies all.. I am an avid golfer so no shooting during address and swinging is definitely no problem

Erik, as a golfer you shouldn't have any problems. Pretty much the same rules apply for photography as they would in a normal round of golf. I think of my camera as a bag of potato chips, if I wouldn't rustle the bag or eat a chip in a normal round I wouldn't take a picture. I just wish some of my buddies were that considerate. They call it "playing defensive golf", I say they are a PITA.

I am really wondering where I am allowed to go and where I am not allowed to go... perhaps they will tell me when I pick up my pass
