I have a nice tripod, grip'd XTi + 70-200. Should I get a tripod ring for use like this or on my monopod?

I want to make sure I am 'safe' and take care of my new baby ;)

If you do, get one off of ebay, no sense in paying 100+ for a canon one

I just bought a Roxsen one off of eBay - supposedly one of the best. However, on the 70-200 f/4L IS while it holds it firmly (there is no play) I can't tighten it down enough so that it won't turn in the mount. My other Canon lenses that have collars don't work this way. I'm thinking about the Canon collars presuming that they don't turn like this.

My advice on the ebay collars is, "Not so fast...."

No need for a tripod collar for support. The only reason you might want to consider a collar is the ease with which you can rotate to portrait orientation.

No real 'need' but it is better and will yield sharper images than cantilevering the whole out on the plate on the camera body.

So it is 'better' on the tripod ring than the bottom of the camera?

Yes.

On the camera, you have the whole mass cantilevered out unsupported. Think of holding the very end of a ruler on a table and twanging it. Same mechanism only you are trying to dampen 50um (50 millionth of a meter of vibration).

The other issue is that on a tripod, it is then a very asymmetric sail in even the slightest breeze. With the color, you have it as more symmetric around the collar - also limiting torsional vibration induced by air movement.

With the collar it is much more balanced.

I don't see any on ebay labeled as 'roxen'.

Link anyone?

Roxsen, not roxen. Sorry I misspelled. In any event, there aren't any things being offered by Roxsen, but there are a number of alternatives on eBay. Just be sure to NOT buy one with a knurled surfaced knob, but one with a ribbed knob. There are a few vendors offering these, including this one...

I got one for my f/4 IS off a HK ebay dealer and couldn't be happier. Thankfully this particular third party accessory ended up well (can't say the same for my third party hood experiences). The collar definitely balances the weight on a tri/monopod much better than from the bottom of the camera, so it was a pretty good buy for me.
