I had the Xti and when the sensor does its cleaning, you here a very noticeable shaking noise for about 1 second.

On the Xsi, I hear no noise at all when the sensor does its cleaning.

Is this normal for the Xsi? Is it quiet for all you other Xsi owners?

I tried searching under "sensor cleaning" and all that came up were related to manually cleaning the sensor. I couldn't find threads relating to this sensor cleaning noise with the Xsi.

Thanks for the welcome, I have much to learn.

I haven't heard any noise from my 450D or my gf's 400D. However, I don't really look for it. It's silent enough that I don't question if it's cleaning or not.

If I listen closely I can hear a very slight high-pitched sound every time I turn it on. Try holding it up to your ear and listen for it.

Not all people are able to hear this, as it is usually above 20kHz, hence older people or those with hearing disabilities may not be able to hear it. By older people, I mean those over 24 years old or so, not 60. After that age your high pitch hearing generally lowers to around 20kHz max. The newer Auto cleaning systems tend to use a higher frequency than the older ones from what I hear.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I guess if you ever heard the Xti's auto cleaning, it is very noticeable. The Xti's noise is not a high pitched noise, but rather it sounds like a mechanical vibration.

Which it exactly is: high frequency mechanical vibration of the filter in front of the sensor.
I have never heard it, ‘tho..
