Yup, me at it again. Found this aluminum cooking pan cover in a local supermarket, thought the shinning inner surface might create some interesting effect. After some cutting, drilling, and tapping, I got this...

The bracket and inner reflecting disk.

Back of the unit with flash installed. I found using with the Omni bouncer produced the best result.

Testing the "focused spot" effect

Test shots. The only lighting used was the 430EX in the dish, triggered by ST-E2.

I am sooo lucky that my daughter is always willing to be my test model :)

Once again, great DIY Lotto!!!!

You have a nice advantage in that you have the tools and ability to machine with some precision. I always love looking at the custom components you fabricate for your DIY's.

In the pictures of your daughter you could either see it as using a fan to blow her hair or some serious static electricity..lolol

yeah. I was wondering how he fabbed the bracket. Must be nice to either be a machinist, or know one. I bought a bowl from Target for $9.00 to try this; when I have time.

Thanks. I don't have a heavy duty milling machine or any thing close to that. Most the cutting are by either the Dremel Tool or hacksaw, bending by a vise and hammer, a drill motor and bits, a tap and die set...the basic hand tools. For the black bracket, I used a piece of black hard plastic and a flat aluminum stock from Home Depot, so cutting and bend them in shape was pretty easy.

Robert, my daughter was blow drying her hair with the floor fan, good opportunity for that hair flying shot.

Lotto,
Mind if I ask what will be the difference in light produced by the one you just made compared to the white one?

Looks great, did you polish up the inside, or leave it the way it was?

Azzure_7, I have make few others using plastic bowls, which have painted white inside. I think white color 'helps' bouncing the light inside dish and project a lot less defined spot or circle. Bare aluminum is more speculative and efficient when light bounces off it. Sort of like comparing a silver and a white reflector.

I didn't polish the inside.

The reflecting dish is also made from a thin aluminum sheet.

Well, your beauty dish looks anything but a DIY project. Very nice work, well thought out and executed.

Cute daughter too.

Very elegant, Lotto. Well done.

Funny how beauty dish mania is popping up everywhere. Nobody's housewares department is safe from the Dremel-wielding forum fiends.

I have to ask you about one construction detail: What are you using for the standoffs holding the deflector? I've been looking for internally threaded tubing forever without success. I can't be sure from your photo whether the standoffs are threaded or if you just ran really long screws through lengths of metal tube.

My guess is that it's just metal tube with a long screw running thought it Dave.
