This is just one more reason why I like to keep a camera, any camera, with me whenever I can. In this case, Marcia and I were in Berlin, and I had put the 5D away as we were just headed out to dinner. Kept the G9, however, and I am glad I did.

As we walked, I saw a bowl of roses. At least a day or two old. I just pointed the camera down on it and shot it as I walked passed. Presented for your critique is both the process and results.

This is the out of camera version. I love the shape of the petals all bunched up in the bowl. The couple of pink ones make a nice point of attention. I like the the fact that the green wall they are sitting on cuts across at an angle - adds a little movement to a very centered composition.

But, as you can see, the colors are a bit flat. I increased the contrast here, got rid of the white whatever, and got rid of the curb edge in the upper right. I really like this version. Marcia and I both decided this will get a frame and a spot on the wall.

But then I got to playing around with different techniques for Sepia conversion, and I thought I would try it on this and I liked this version too.

But, in spite of the lovely texture, it seemed to lack a center of interest. So, for this final version, I laid the sepia version over the processed color version and gently brushed away some of the sepia, revealing just a hint of color in the roses. Here is where I ended up. A very different look than the color version, but, I think, it works well as a mixed sepia/color shot.

So, any thoughts? Favorites? Or none of them do it for you?

I lvoe the last one best. I'm glad you expermented, it was fun to read and see. The one that you really like, I think is a bit *too* contrasting-- the flower edges are black to me. The last one is wonderful, though. Good work.

Well I like the second edit, although I dont care for the BG at all. I think a closer crop might be cool with this image

Thanks for the comments. When you say background, do you mean the green shelf (wall, whatever) or the stone back background?

I really think you need some fresher roses to make this picture work correctly. Something just isn't working for me as is.

actually I think thats why this pic works. I like the fact that not all the roses are alive, it adds contrast to the photo (living/dead)

I hope you don't mind, but I was playing around with this to try to figure out what I didn't like because I really liked the bowl of flowers with the added contrast and I thought it was definitely improved with the white pole removed.

I think, personally, I like photos like this better when the subject is not so centered. Have you thought about cropping it a little bit?

Although I like the green, it's not hard to change the wall color, either. Not perfect, but here's a quick idea.

Oh, wow! That is GREAT. Now I am ashamed that I didn't think of hitting the color myself. Lots of great benefit to be had with a fresh set of eyes! I really like the green thing, as I think it adds to the overall feel of "seen better days", and was a little disappointed when it's presence wasn't as well received (NOTE TO BLAM and IBCYLATER: I appreciate the critique, even if, especially if, it reflects your real take on it in spite of what I like!) Going with a more matching color will give me all the more reason to not crop it out.

Thanks, and well done!
