yes i have the Sigma MACRO 105mm f/2.8 EX DG, im happy with the resalts its a great lens, i took this picture of a fly, cropped

IMAGE: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y99/picardo/macro/croppedfly.jpg

however i have been toying with the idea of getting in closer to insects, read about tubes and kenko tubes heard theres no real diffrence between the two.

also heard about 2 x convertors, and even reverse lenses.

i dont own any tubes and never tryed them, like the ones on ebay or kenko ones so not sure how these perform,

however i did have a play with my 18-55 lens today reversed on my sigma 105mm and like the closer resalts from it even through quailty was not the best.

being quite close it was hard to get all the subject in focus the av aperture
was set to lowest. overall i liked the closer results it gave. and im not even sure if the the 18-55 canon lens was the ideal lens to use as i just heard about the 50mm, hopefylly someone can put m straightt on that.

however im now wondering if i will be better useing either a reverse lens, a kenko tube the cheaper ebay tubes, now whch one would get me the closest.

defenetly want to get closer shots now i have seen it for my own eyes how closer you can get useing a lens reversed :)

now which one should i go for which is going to give me the closest pictures, kenko, 2x convertors, cheaper ebay tubes, diopters, or lens.

yeah 2nd shot was with my 18-55 lens, without proper fitment just testing it.

will the 18-55mm lens be ok as a reverse lens? as heard people just talking about the 50mm?

also what do you guys thinks the best for closer shots kenko tubes, jessops 2x convertors, cheaper ebay tubes, diopters, or lens.

I'd get a set of Kenko ext tubes - easiest to use and no IQ loss. With the cheapo ebay ext tubes you lose control of the aperture which is a pain. A set of Kenkos will take you to 2:1 max with your sigma.

thanks lordv, can i ask what magnifacation the 18-55mm lens reveresed on my 105mm will take me two? or could i maybe use the 105mm, the kenkos, and reversed lens together for more magnifacation?

i have just got some jessops 2x teleconvertors at a bargain price too can these be used in the mix?

IMO get the tubes and forget about the rest of that stuff. The tubes will get you 2:1 and if you need more magnification you can look into it after that, but for the most part 2:1 is going to get the job done for you.

A cheap teleconverter is going to destroy your image quality.

ok thanks,

so would you say the kenko tubes will give me more magnifaction than a reversed 50mm prime lense on my sigma 105mm ?

Another vote for tubes.

Hard to say what mag the reversed lens will give you. Haven't tried it, but you can! Use just the bare 105 macro lens and min focus distance. You know that's 1:1. Take a shot of a ruler or something. Then add the reversed lens with macro lens and focus as close as you can and take a shot of the ruler and compare. ;)
