I just saw a program on TV that talked about the annual gurning contest in Egremont, Cumbria, U.K. I could find very little about it on the web. This (external link) is the best I could find (and it's old).

So, I have three questions for our British members....

1. What, exactly, is the story behind gurning.

2. Why would anyone do that?

3. If the contest is annual, why have we not seen pictures here?
