Hi All

Today was very grey low cloud cover and scattered showers ~ IMO not the best for airshow images. So I got a mixed bag of results and these two are a couple that made me feel it was worthwhile, all being well more to follow over the next few days.

First the Red Arrows ~ my old 350D never gave the chance to get the crossover point just right but the 40D helped me nail it a few times of which this is one.

IMAGE: http://www.1stdesignit.co.uk/FIA2008/Reds_3324.jpg

Second the F18 ~ I have seen other folk hereabouts catch that moment when the leading edge triggers the vapour clouds, this one 'spoke' to me until I have a closer look at the others.
IMAGE: http://www.1stdesignit.co.uk/FIA2008/F18_3539.jpg

As I said aweful skies :( But I enjoyed it all the same :) Oh both these are crops even though I was using a 100-400 & levels tweaked and sharpened to suit.

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Just got stuck into some PPing so here a 3 more.

Typhoon ~ this one did not sharpen up as well as I like i.e. a tad of OOF maybe but I do like the 'pulsing' of the afterburners.

IMAGE: http://www.1stdesignit.co.uk/FIA2008/Typhoon_afterburners_3345.jpg

Typhoon again but showing 'he' can make the vapour edges. Not the best but its late!
IMAGE: http://www.1stdesignit.co.uk/FIA2008/Typhoon_vapour_3389.jpg

Vulcan at end of landing run.

Right thats my lot for now.

PS The more I look through the set the more I am peeved about the conditions ~ grrr!

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Timing on the first shot is spot on. I like them all. Sure #3 is a little OOF but it's still a keeper IMO.

Nice work.

I think my 20D didn't come with that software update, either! :D

Nice shots Laurence :) I'm with you totally about shooting against grey skies, it's not easy, and the results often aren't very satisfying :( You did well though :) Looking forward to some more images! The Vulcan is gorgeous isn't she! :D

Looks like they had a nice day today weather-wise, PITA I couldn't make it  ...

Hi David

Yes, I need to post up some more soonish but must try to get an early night as I am off to the Big Cat Sanctuary tomorrow.

I hope I have one or two more of the Vulcan worth sharing and one thing for sure her takeoff and turn away from the crowd creates a massive welling of literally gut wrenching, ground shaking thunder....awesome:cool:

Oh whoever went today possibly had a better day than me and looking at the flight list lucky devils including the Vimy ~ so far I have been to 4 events and each time she has been 'scratched' grrr!!!!!!

PS Don't forget to PM me when you are doing some rig shots:)

Yes, I really wanted to get the critical crossover point and I have this left to right pass aircraft and also I think the opposite one on another pass ~ on eof each, well pleased  Re: OOF ~ sometimes if a little OOF they can still have aesthetic value to me. A good number of my Vulcan images are poor but unlike "others" I have not deleted them on the first cut though they are not worth sharing!

;) certainly not a hack, just an old hack getting more with the newer technology

Incidently looking through the set again I realised that some of the slowest aircraft I tried (WW1 dogfight re-enactments) are all OOF and oddly the B1B images are equally for me appalling ~ doh!

Apart from the Vulcan image posted earlier with its parachute braking I did get a few more worth showing bearing in mind how bad the skies were, so here they are:-

Very nice shots there Laurence :) Shows the advantage of that extra 200mm over my 70-200 :)

Where were you standing to get those shots? I like the touchdown shot particularly :)

Ref 100-400, I can see myself hiring that one again though I do like my own things but it is a costly lens.

I was in the Grandstand uppermost level so about 35ft off the ground, there were moments when I wished I could be two places at once i.e. at ground level nearer the runway as well as the grandstand . The one thing that got me about that location was the tannoy system speakers were up on poles and the wires strung between them ~ not good IMO. So the view directly 'ahead' looking at the landings etc they reduced the viewing pleasure.

In respect of position ~ I can see the need for two bodies if you are nearer the runway, say the 24-105 for takeoff runs and the 100-400 for the rotation (depending on where along the line you are) and the aerial shots.

Nice sharp photos Laurence :)

Agreed about the skies  But if that's what you has to work with, there's not much else you can do!

I'm going to hire a 100-400 for the Wings and Wheels and Shoreham airshows next month :) Fingers crossed the weather holds out better!

Cheers!

David :)

From what I can recall about the Wings n Wheels choose your location on the flightline carefully ~ I was too far to one end and missed some of the better Reds action (assuming they are in the 'order'). The Wheels action will definitely benefit from the 400 end, I had to crop heavily using my 70-300 that year. Oh sadly the flightline and Wheels action positioning means that the background buildings are a major 'no-no' headache.

But Shoreham from the images posted by others last year looks very nice indeed, what date is that???

Hmmm whereabouts would you recommend I go on the flightline then? Might you be going to that? Maybe we could go to different points to capture the best of the action from more than one angle :)

I use this for airshow dates :)

Shoreham is on the 30th/31st.

Cheers!
