Why would that matter - he didn't have to pay to be there. And I never got in his way. :)

Well it would matter because that is his work space and he is working and if you have the attitude that he doesn't have to pay to be there so he should consider himself lucky then you lack a very fundamental understanding of what it is to be a working photographer. That lack likely shows. He is paying to be there, he is trading his time with his family/friends/couch to be there so he can make money for food/clothes/housing and a new fishing rod.

Still the photographers need to raise holy hell with the people that are in control of those passes they are not party favors.

That's also the probable reason he stepped in front of you. Lot nicer than punching you.
I don't think you should expect respect in this situation.

Just a rant I guess. But it makes me sad that photographers can be rude and uncourteous, especially to another fellow photographer. Just ridiculous.

I suspect the "pro" realized (by your demeanor, the pass you had, and your interest in hardware) that you were not a working pro, though you were in "his space" that really belonged to working pros. Just a guess, of course.

Thank you all for making my point in the OP. And just so you know - I am PAYING to do what I do. I Do NOT make money. I'm in school right now, paying 40,000$ a year to do other people's work. And the "workspace" you are referring to was HUGE. There were about 40 available seats around me, and he sat right next to me and got in my way. Take that for what you will.

@Quad - he's not "trading time with family/friends/couch" - as you so aptly put it, he was working. It's his job. If he doesn't want to be there, then he doesn't have to be. If you hate your job, quit.

@Polo - basic societal respect should not be forgone because you simply think you are entitled to something that someone else isn't. Were you the photog that stepped in front of me? :P

@ SkipD - thank you for your honest reply. Obviously I was excited to be in the photo wells at a pro sporting event, as would most any of us non-pros (and from what it sounds like, a translation of "not-worthy.")

The moral of the story (again) is - don't be a dick. I was in no one's way, I said "hey how's it going." But several of you are making my point. This sense of entitlement is getting a little out of hand. IMO, of course, which is not shared by many.

This is the one valuable thing I've learned from this experience, especially given the venue.

:)

What makes you think he was a dick? Ever considered that you were? You were not supposed to be there and you distracted the guy while he was working. I hate it when people do that too. Get off your high-horse and look in the mirror before you start slandering other people.

Maybe I distracted him, and if you read my post before YOURS, that was something that I've learned from all this.

However, my saying hello does not make me a dick. nothing malicious was done on my part. A simple, "sorry can't talk - working" would have been just fine. So...that being said, I'm done with this thread. This was just supposed to be a rant anyway, and I think most everyone has said what has needed to be said.

It is what the pro thought that counts.
Obviously, you didn't fool him. I'm sure he knows all the other pros in the area. Your best play was to be silent and not play one of a club in which you are not a member. You may have made him wonder that way.
I know it is disappointing when others don't agree with you.
But you lied to us.
It took a long time to come out with the thing about the pass.
Until then, I was completely on your side.

What difference does that make? I didn't "lie" to anyone. I was there to take pictures. i said hello to another photographer, and yeah made the mistake about mentioning gear. I wasn't trying to be "one of (you) guys," whatever that means. I wasn't "hiding" the fact that my pass wasn't a photography pass from anyone. Why would I?

Don't try to pit more than yourself against me by saying "you lied to us." My original intent was not to choose "sides" (pros vs. amateurs), but rather to rant about the fact that one's status as a "pro" does not entitle them to treat anyone else like crap, no matter what they do. Maybe I'm wrong about that, maybe "professionals" in the field of photography have the right to treat non-professionals like this. If that's the case, the word professional is not applicable.
