I was trying to shoot my daughter, when my camera/lens started acting up. At first I thought it was the lens (17-55 f2.8 IS), as it showed "00" for the aperture value... (I was in Manual mode), as well as the auto focus didn't work (checked the AF and made sure it was ON). I quickly dismounted the lens and blew some air on the contacts with a rocket blower. Mounted the lens back and it worked fine for a few shots, then I started having blocked FOV... the bottom of the image would be all black. Thinking it was the lens, I swapped for the 10-22, and got the same result. It doesn't appear on every shot, and zooming in and out appears to make it come and go (no particular result for a specific zoom range).

Has anyone seen this before? I've had the camera for 7 months, and it probably has no more than 2000 clicks on it. What the hell is going on here?!?!? ??? Could it really be a failed shutter this early on?!?! I barely use!!!

It's probably a broken shutter. Send it in for repair.

Your camera appears to be having issues with the action of the reflex mirror...it flips up to allow the light to pass to the shutter and sensor. The black bottom area in the frame is an indication that as the mirror swings upward (toward the top of the camera), the inverted image which falls on the sensor is blocked at the bottom part of the image.

&^%$^%&%*$

The black area would explain a malfunctioning shutter, but what about the "00" for aperture and auto focus not working !?!?!

Tough to say.

But regardless, sending it to Canon for repair will sort the whole thing out.

One thing I should have mentioned was that I had the new Alien Bees wireless transmitter mounted on the hot shoe. Could that have possible caused the shutter to screw up (wrong sync time)???

Um, wait. Does the camera take good pictures in ambient light? What if you use the same shutter speed/aperture combination as in the problem picture (but without any flash)?

If it takes good pictures in ambient light then it's almost certainly not a shutter issue, and is likely a flash sync issue.

Yup, your exposure time 1/500 is too fast.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Works absolutely fine in ambient light. I took these yesterday in the sun. Shutter speeds were in the 1000s... Took about 100 shots with no problems whatsoever... :)

is you flash set in HSS mode?

I agree about the shutter speed being to fast.

Take the same shot with the same settings but use the flash on camera and see what ya get.

If you are firing off-camera strobes with a radio trigger, HSS will do nothing.

As others have stated, your camera is not capable of syncing to a flash at greater than 1/250s, and for an off-camera strobe/flash you may only be able to get 1/200s.

As for the 00 and Af problems, I'll bet your lens was simply not seated correctly.

Duh.

Is it possible to have a senior moment even though your not a senior?

I have no remote except to the off shoe cord. That's why I was thinking that. Then after I hit send I remembered he is using wireless.

I had to clarify my statement above also. Don't feel too bad.

That usually happens when the shutter speed is faster than the flash sync speed. The 00 error was because the lens was'nt lock on th got that error once when I put my lens on and did;nt turn it all the way around until it clicked
