I don't think he's degrading the profession but he's getting bad advice so why is it wrong for the ones who know to help him learn in this public forum instead of ignoring it and moving on to the next thread? Even if there delivery is less than subtle, sorry but the kids get treated like babies enough in school to have it here to - can only keep 'em bubbled wrapped from the real world for so long. So to ignore the post is doing less good than replying, even if it's not what he wants to hear.

The OP does read like a bad craigs list ad and posting it on a pro photographers board isn't exactly the smartest of moves (that would be the bad advice). This is a profession where you can buy a cheap body and little lens and claim to be a pro photographer. A pilot for a Boeing plane can't do that, and a pilot for r/c can't go claim to be a Boeing pilot to get a job without experiance in one. A bad photographer though can go undercut a pro long as the client listens - so that comparison has no merit at all.

Moving on - Not a fan of the posted logo, it has no flow at all and just "bla" looking at it. If you want a professional looking logo hire a professional and know what the logo is for, what kind of photographer for example - sports, portrait, product, senior, wedding - there's a lot of different ones and you want your logo to reflect to that.

Brendan, no offense, but you're part of the reason why a lot of people don't take our profession seriously.

Like the posters above me, how would you feel if someone came up to you and asked you to photograph something for $50.00 - and to photograph that thing would take you 5 hours? Then, after you're done photographing it, you have to go process the images in post production using whatever software you have. You're looking at another 5 hours there, maybe less if you're capable in photoshop. You're looking at literally $5.00/hour.

Remember, graphic designers/photographers have their own mouths to feed and equipment to upkeep. Your SLR costs the better part of a grand, lenses, computers, memory cards... It's not all that different for Graphic Artists. My cousin is a graphic artist, and I hired her to design a logo for me - and paid her $400.00 for it.

Please be a bit more sensitive next time you think of posting something like this.

+1.

Even though I am only 15, and I am no where near a professional photographer, I agree with you(Zansho).

age is not an excuse. I am 18 now but started at 16. I easily make $50+ per hour. my biggest mistake when i started at 16 was not charging enough, but even then i was netting at least $30+/hour. I now realise i am good at what i do and i refuse to waste my time with clients who wont pay the price for quality work.
learn to develop your skill and some basics of business. this might take some time and patience, but find an area of photography you are good at and run with it.

Don't see why people respond to this thread if they don't agree with it. This is an international forum and $50 for the thousands of graphic designers in India is good cash. Whilst I know he won't get any professionals doing it, if I was 15 and was looking for an extra buck I wouldn't say no.

I'll post some designs later. :D (If the thread hasn't been locked, that is.)

I can't really see what everyone's problem with this thread is, he's offering $50 for a simple logo design. Everyone has to start somewhere... I've just finished a 2 year Graphics course at college, and little projects like this are perfect opportunities for me to raise a little extra cash, as well as getting experience and more work in my portfolio until I find a full-time job.

Do you have any colour preferences?

i am not expecting anyone to spent 10 hours making a simple arrangement of text, im not looking for a professional artist who charges 1000$ to make a logo. i just thought that if someone seen this they may totally wing it and spend maybe 30 minutes or so in photoshop and create something they have done before and they just had a quick and easy idea in mind.

Let the kid do what he wants, its a public forum. Its all economics people, if you want to make $50, make the kid a design, if not.....skip to the next post. If someone came up to me, and asked to take a picture for $50, I would either take a picture on my phone, and email it to them or say no thanks, and move along. He isnt degrading a profession, thats almost like saying a r/c plane hobbyist takes away from being a airplane pilot on a Boeing.

thank you!

sometimes it not all about the money, to some ppl it is but not to others. i know your probably thinking "what does this kid know" bla bla bla. but sometimes i do things for free for friends or other ppl on forums. its just who i am. ever watched the movie "pay it forward"? no? well than please go watch it. it has a big influence on my life.

wow, im sorry for posting my craigslist type ad in a "pro photographers board" i guess since im no where near pro im not welcome here?
and thanks for the critique on my logo, i appreciate it.

so your telling me that if one of your friends offered you 50$ to make them something they thought would be difficult but you knew would be easy you would turn them down? being young like you i will do anything for money, i guess you dont need money.

I could make an absolutely AWESOME logo for you. I'd certainly be open to $50 to produce a proof, but I don't think you'd like the licensing fees =P

Ok, but seriously now. You didn't know any better, and that's cool, but take some of the criticism to heart. A lot of people get their feathers ruffled over this because photography is how they make a living. The approach you took is the same that many clients try to do to lowball, or to go fishing for new shooters who just aren't experienced enough to know not to accept that type of an offer.

Logo creation is expensive. It's supposed to represent you and your business. I'm sure you didn't mean to upset anyone, but just be sure you understand why people took the stance that they did. If you can take that to heart, it's going to make you a much more business savvy photographer, and keep you from getting burned by clients who are hoping to get work done cheap/free.

+1.. I just read through this thread and I could not believe how many self-appointed arbiters of photography practices and sandy vags there are in this thread. Bunch of sanctimonious keyboard commandos with too much time on their hands, I guess.

What's wrong, no retarded kids to pick on, puppies to kick or babies to steal candy from in their areas?

To the OP, I think you made a valid request and just ignore the whiners. They will go and find something else to whine about soon enough.

Funny!

Thanks for posting that, I was getting really worried about the level of uptightness in this post.

If I was 16, I woulda offered $5 :)

There are designers charging thousands of dollars who could stand to learn something from the $50 guys. Same goes for photographers.

I copied this from the POTN main page:

Forum contains also photo sharing and gallery discussions, general photography and technique discussion areas. Exhibit Engine support boards are here, too. If you'll look closely, no where does it say that this is a "pro photographers board".
