Canon 1dmkII Shutter Actuation Count

Hello everyone,

I just bought a used Canon 1d Mark II on eBay, and I think it may have been misrepresented in the auction. The seller claimed that the camera only had around 29,000 shutter actuations.

She based this number on a program called "Cancount." When I received the camera, I took a test shot, and attempted to download cancount. Unfortunately, I ended up on some German web site, which asked me for 13 euros to download it.

Instead, I downloaded the free, and much more detailed Simple EXIF reader for Mac. This program said the camera was closer to 160,000 shutter actuations.

Here's the screenshot:

All I want to know is which program is more reliable, Cancount or Simple EXIF reader. OR, does anyone know of an industry-standard EXIF reader that everyone agrees gives a reliable shutter actuation count? Thanks everyone.

Cancount should be reliable.

Not sure if everyone agrees about anything here, but if you post a jpg with the EXIF intact, CS3 can open it and view the shutter count, as can any number of EXIF viewers.

Why don't you post one of 2 things-

#1. The mac software so not only can we check it out, but we can also compare a file of ours to the Cancount software.......some of us (like me) have fusion and have both windows & Mac.

#2 Why don't you host an un-edited image so someone can confirm that shutter count......or not.

Yep, works perfectly, if you don't have CS3, get the one in that link (1Dcount) works perfectly well and matches CS3:D

CS3 doesn't match foxbat's 1dcount for me. CS3 isn't indicating that my counter rolled over past 65536 so it says 48393 instead of 114929

Interesting, my cancount from Foxbats utility matched my CS3 exactly.

BreezeBrowser Pro displays this number for the 1D2. I'm not sure how acurate it is, but mine always seemed to be about right. Shutter replacement cost $325 when I had my 1D2N shutter replaced. I got well over 200,000 before the shutter failed. If the 160,000 is acurate, perhaps a refund of about $180 would be fair based on the expected shutter life and the prorated cost of replacement. One would thin the seller would know the 29K wasn't acurate if the acurate number is actualy 160k.

Excactly. CS3 says 25K actuations on my Mark II, whereas 1Dcount says 91K.

Strange indeed, CS2 and 1D Count give me the same number of shots.
