one thing i miss about older film cameras. the cable release. they were universal, inexpensive. i think the one for my 20d was a couple hundred bucks when i first priced it. i have a release cable for my elan 2e, but it's main function if for bulb exposures.

i'd like to photograph some humingbirds that come up on the front porch, but would like to be a little ways away when the camera fires, and the one with the longer cable is alot more expensive than i have the money to buy, and it would seem senseless just to get a short cable.

any thoughts.

I have a timer release cable for my 40D, I can set it up to take shots at various intervals not to mention simply press the shutter release button. I paid about $20 on eBay for it.

I hear you on the old manual cables, my original cable for my OM-10 (circa '82?) works on my Yashicamat & my Rollei (with an adapter).

guess i'm gonna head over to ebay. will the cable for the 40d work on other camera models. the 20d will become a backup camera, i'd like to add a 5d or one of the mark IIs or something. would like something that would kind of be universal.

Sorry for not checking back sooner, the cable looks like it has a standard 3-pin female end that will connect to any of the EOS xxD line, at least.

I went over to eBay to find the cable, in case the link doesn't work, here is the description:
"Aputure Timer Remote C3 for Canon 1Ds 1D 30D 5D 40D R8B"
Note the spelling of "Aputure" it drove me crazy, but helps in the search engine ;-)a

http://cgi.ebay.com …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

It has a Buy It Now for $39.99 + $9 S&H, either I guessed wrong about what I paid, or the price went up. Either way, it works wonders.

If you have an 'L' bracket, beware. I have an RRS L bracket for my 40D, the inside of the bracket, on the side, has enough of an opening to pull aside the rubber connector cover and plug the remote in, however, the rubber cover pushes against the connector and will cause the connection to drop. I thought the remote died, but realized I needed to relieve the pressure on the connector and all was well.

The best part of the timer remote (for me, family guy) is that you can set it up to take 'n' number of photos after a delay. This means, I can press a button, take 10 (or whatever I set) seconds to walk over to the family and get into the shot, then wait as 30 shots are taken (with or without on/off camera strobes) so that we have a chance of getting all family members with smiles, eyes open, and fingers out of the noses. . .

jmcder53,

Have you made your purchase yet?

You can get an awesome wireless remote for the same money. I just made this purchase about 1 month ago and could not be happier.

Check out the cheap ones from Gadget Infinity - I picked up mine for $15 or so and it works just as well as the Canon one :D

$6 shipped, works fine. If you are any good with your hands/are willing to mod this, you could easily put an extender in. The only thing about the XXD series is that the connector is proprietary, versus the rebel series with the sub mini headphone plugs.

If you need some help with extension, feel free to PM me.

haven't bought one yet. looking at some of the ones on ebay....they are brands i haven't really heard of, so wasn't sure if i should spend the money. there is one that i saw that used a standard microphone headphone between the release, and what plugs into the camera, so you could make it as long as the cable you bought.
like i said, i don't want to buy something cuz it is 20 bucks, and then find out something that was 30 would be so much better.

Agreed, the adapters are nice, but you can build those yourself if you're handy. In the end, though, it'd probably end up costing you approximately the same amount of money if you had to buy connectors. If you don't have the tools... well, then it's an added $50 + (cheap side ~$15)

As far as the "worth," you can buy the genuine versions and hack those up, too. The shutter button is more "canon" like, but the switch is very simple, It is a two stop button with a mechanical (enclosure) slide lock. I honestly don't see much going wrong with these devices, but then again, I am all for saving a few bucks.

Do not get this one. The N8 is for Nikon.

The one you want is the C8 version. I have one and it is very good. I got mine from POTN member Teamspeed. He seems to be out of the C3's right now.

If you want an wired one that can be made very long, get the POTN release from the POTN support shop. It can be extended.

There is also a wireless model available a the same store as the POTN wired remote. I haven't used it, so I cannot comment on it other than I have heard others say it is a good remote.

DDCSD, that is one of the one that i saw from ebay that linked to the procameragear link that you sent. i looked at the wireless one also, but does the wireless require the corded version to work?

"Couple hundred bucks?" Where were you looking for the release? I just found the Canon RS-80N3 release, which is the standard release for the XXD series cameras, on B&H for $49.95.

If you mean both parts in the picture, then yes. One part is the transmitter and the other is the receiver (with the wire and connector attached). On my Phottix C8, you can also use the receiver (by itself) as a wired remote.

it may have been the canon wireless remote, or a cord remote that was more than 10 feet or so. this was back in 2005, so it is more extravagant than the cable that is about 6 inches long. i may have mistyped the amount, but i remember something i looked at was over 100, the battery grip was up there on price, that might be what i was thinking of.
