i just got the bg-e2 grip for my 40d today, but when i put it on the camera if i turn the power switch on the grip to ON, it will supply power to the camera but i cant not use any of my menu's or settings buttons. i can still use the focus and shutter buttons, but pics wont even show up on the lcd after i take a shot. but if i turn the power switch on the grip to OFF, it still supplies power to the camera but cant use the buttons on the grip.

has anyone else run into this problem, or at least know of a solution. like i mention i just got this grip and threw it on in the parking lot before a wedding today so i didnt have time to look anything up to see if it might just be a simple setting in the camera. any feedback would be great.

Welcome to the forums...... Sorry its under such ugly circumstances.

I have had a similar problem with mine when it becomes loose. Is you nice and tight?

is it the canon brand?

and dont tighten it way too tight
the plastic gears break easily

the on/off switch on the grip is just for the buttons on the grip
so if you turn it off...the buttons on the grip will not work

Also, you name it as a BG-E2. Does this model work with a 40D? I thought the BG-E2N was required.

It does, does it make the shutter sound, and then you cannot recall it on the screen????

It is the canon bg-e2. I can shoot with the grip buttons when it is turned on, but no image will come up on the screen, and unless I shut the grip OFF I can not use any of the buttons on the body. to review a picture I have to shut off the grip, hit the play button.

I was told by the guy at my local camera shop that this model of grip would work, and have heard from many others on here that it is ok to use. just curious if there was a simple solution. if not I will return it and get the bg-e2n. hopefully it is nothing to do with the body though.

The specs say the BG-E2 (although discontinued) is for the 20D and the 30D, while the BG-E2N is for the 30D and the 40D. It also says the difference is the weather seals of the BG-E2N, and not any of the electronics.

That being said, I would probably find a good camera store that has the BG-E2N to try it on your camera and see if there really is an electronics difference to the BG-E2.

The symptoms you describe sound like the shutter switch is being pressed halfway in. Try hitting the shutter button several times to see if might be physically stuck with the first position closed.

I use a BG-E2 on my 40D with no problems so it should not be a compatibility issue.

the BG-E2 and the 40d work beautifully together for me. definitely not a compatibility issue in general, rather a specific problem for your camera. maybe something wrong with the contacts?

Great to hear because I just got a 40D and will be in the market for a battery grip for it soon. Thanks.
