Well, my experience in electronics leads me to believe that the card is especially sensitive to power spikes. Attaching and detaching the lens would certainly change the power demand on the camera system, but what I don't understand is why it would do it if the camera is turned off when you change the lens.

well, I could bring the card and the camera both (the card works fine on my M3) when we get together for the NW meet and you could experience it if you want to...it's strange.

Oh, I believe you. I've seen some pretty weird electronic malfunctions in my day. I think you have a card that's just overly sensitive to power fluctuations.

I've never heard that before. I've changed lenses before while the camera was on but, never lost photos. Wierd...

Well so far kinda so good.
I haven't lost any pictures yet since switching cards which is a good thing, but was out shooting birds and after about 350 shots I couldn't view the photos I was taking.
Just a big question mark came up on screen, and said couldn't enlarge image.

Once back home all pictures were on the card and able to be downloaded though. A bit strange.

Hi,

whilst searching for Firmware for my 1D Mark II to make it AF with my Sigma 500mm F4.5 EX HSM and a Canon Mark 1.4x II TC I came across version 1.2.6 which states -

This firmware update (version 1.2.6) includes the following improvements:

  • Fix the phenomenon wherein the camera does not detect the capacity correctly when high-capacity recording media are initialized.
This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware version up to 1.2.4 installed. If your camera's firmware is already version 1.2.6, it is not necessary to perform this update.

It is available HERE (external link)

Not sure if this will solve your problem as I've not tried it myself,

If anyone can come up with older versions of the 1D Mark II Firmware or solve the AF problem with the above lens and TC combo then I'd be well pleased. The only update to directly affect the AF was 1.1.0 so would it be safe to reload 1.0.3 or CAN you go backwards with the firmware?

Mike.

I use an 8GB Sandisk Extreme IV CF card, and assorted 4GB CF cards in my 1DsII without any of the problems described here, fortunately. :)
