I do not know what sector this belongs to, I am going to Nevada for the Star Trek Convention in August and wanted to know if anybody here has been to one of those convention before. I wanted to know if the lighting conditions are good enough to shoot photographs of the stars (if that is allowed) without having to resort to increasing the ISO and if a 70 mm - 200 mm f4.0 L IS is sufficient to shoot pictures.
Some of the stars such as Scott Bakula is charging 200.00 a picture which I am not about to pay.

Also what about Las Vegas itself, the pictures on television seems to indicate plenty of lights in that city so I assume I can get away with a higher ISO?

thanks
Bond

using a 40D I wouldn't worry about higher ISO, you'll be fine. As for photography at the convention you'll need to look up the policies for that. As for around town there is decent light but unless you're using a fast prime you're still going to want to crank up the ISO for many shots.

I bet the best shots are using a wide lens and getting close to the characters in the audience.

An example of what you could expect at a fandom convention, at the extremes of dim lighting and camera and lens performance:

Japanese voice actor Kumiko Watanabe at the Animazement convention in a dimly illuminated room. Available light, XTi, 70-300mm lens at 300mm, ISO 1600, 1/8, f/5.6, manual white balance. The full-size version was pretty noisy and resizing masked the noise, but it was possible to get a useable image.

The light conditions are dismal. I am certain flash is not allowed but based upon what you mentioned, people do not have to pay outrageous fees to sit with a star trek movie actor or any actor(ess) at a convention to have their pictures taken, but I would assume that a zoom or telephoto lens would be more appropiate due to the fact that so many people will be there and the seats one may get may be all the way at the back?

Also this will be at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, would that make a difference? I rarely travel to begin with so I am not certain about the convention rooms at Hilton Hotels and the light conditions if it varies from hotel to hotel or is basically the same.

I haven't been to the Hilton in a while so going off of memory. Inside the Star Trek Experience it will be very tough conditions. It is mostly dark but has some very bright lighting effects.

The convention area will be better but still not great. Your 40D will do fine but you might want to consider an f/2.8 or faster lens.

Good lord, what an orgy of merchandising that is. I've only ever gone to fan run conventions, which are pretty much the complete opposite of this event. I love how they market "extremely limited" photo ops and autographs for $149+, noting how quickly they sold out the last "extremely limited" time they did it.
