My 580EX II has started getting loose on the hotshoe and when I shoot horizontal it will not flash.

Is anyone else having this issue and if you have how have you fixed it?

The 580EX is much easier as I can tighten it as much as I need to.

Is it the flash that's having difficult tightening up in the hotshoe or is the hotshoe itself that's coming loose from the camera body?

It is really hard to tell which one is actually loose?

Does it do this on both your cameras? If it does it on only one of them, then the problem is likely the camera. If it does it on both, then there is a problem with the flash.

When it comes down to it, I also hate the new locking mechanism of the EX II. It doesn't let me affix to the camera as tight as I would like, and does "shimmy" around a tad.

I see what you mean as it does swivel just a little little bit, but I doubt it's anything to worry about.

Applies to all EOS bodies. I had to do it to my 10D and 1D II the other week.

Thanks for all the replies and this is a very big problem when you are shooting a wedding and take a couple of images and everything fires and then you turn the camera to get a vertical and bang "no flash" when you really needed it. It only happened once ( I don't use it right now) and hope to get it working back again soon. I will check it on the other camera and then I may be able to narrow it down the the flash.

Though this post is 4 weeks old, I decided to add to it – my 580 EX II started to loosen over the past 2 months and finally just completely left me hanging at a wedding yesterday - I ended up having to make a roll out of electrical tape and tape it to the bottom of the flash, which now sits between the flash and the camera body to push it back and force the contacts to touch. I was very stressed out and glad I could I "fix" it, but this is a $500 flash and this shouldn't happen! I don't shoot nearly as many weddings as other pros (i.e. overusage can't be it), I can't believe this is an issue. I will try this: http://shimworld.wordpress.com …hotshoe-fix/#comment-6264 (external link)

I have two more weddings this week and for my main flash to be flimsy in an area that's supposed to be improved is a huge disappointment. Wish it had a dial.

It's definitely the quick release on the 580EX II if anyone else is wondering about this!

Mine does that in all positions..will work fine and then bam, no flash..I have to take it off the camera or bracket (doesn't matter) and put it back on to get it back working again. My hotshoe on camera and brackets and off camera cords all all tight..I made a list one time of 23 photographers all having the same problem with the 580ex II and even the promaster 7500Dx does it on a canon camera..Canon so far offers no help and no admittance that there is a problem so I guess we have to live with it... I wonder if Nikon users have their own flash problems?
