Something wrong with the image

I could not decide on which forum it would be best to ask this question.
I am using a new canon 40D with the latest canon digital photo professional, and every once in a while when I transfer my pics from the card, it ends up looking like this.
Is this a problem with the card, the software or the camera. I have also noticed that most of the times my files in the card are called "100 Canon", but once in a while I get two folders "100 Canon" and "101 Canon". The bad pic came from the card with the two folders. The 100canon folder was empty and the pics were on the 101canon folder.
If anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it, bec if its due to the camera, I need to return it.

My first guess is that this is the camera. The numbering is perfectly OK, the camera will generate these folders as it needs them.

Have you tried another card - and does it happen with another card?

My first guess is actually the card rather than the camera. Second thing would be the image editing software, particularly if you use RAW and something other than DPP or lightroom/ACR. Camera after that.

Easiest way to test, set the camera to jpg+raw, and use EOS Utility to remotely capture the file (as in from camera to computer directly). if jpg and raw both have the problem, the camera is bad. If there are no problems, the memory card is bad. If one of the two files is bad but the other fine, it could be a software problem or a camera problem.

this happened once before on the ProMax 4 GB card, which I received for free when buying the camera. This time it happened on my 512MB lexar card. This is a rare occurance, but it has never happened before.
I shoot in RAW and use DPP.

Does the photo show up fine with the cameras LCD?

How do you transfer the images?
Try transferring them with a card reader.

I have seen weird things like this happen from the reader. Recently a friend borrowed one of my cameras and called in a panic because all the pictures he took were having a similar problem to yours. They were fine when looking at them in camera but when he pulled them over this happened. Turned out that the card reader on his Dell monitor was causing the issue. Downloaded them using his laptop and had no issue. Pull the picture from the card using a different reader or different computer and see if you are still having the problem.
