Your link seems to provide the definitive list!

I guess this means none of my lenses are designed for the rain! ...oh well!

Cheers! :)

The rubber gasket on the mount is the giveaway.

Like I said, the 70-200 f/4 IS is not listed on the website, but from what I understand has the rubber gasket and other internal seals. Most consider it DWR, and it is on every list except Canon's website.

EDIT-I was wrong here!
Most L lenses are DWR to a degree. The manual for the 17-40 says this on page 1.

5. Sealed construction for higher dust- and water-
resistance compared to previous lenses. (For
maximum protection, a filter must also be
attached to the front of the lens.)

Yet it is not on the list, and does not have the rubber gasket (EDIT-It does have the gasket, I was wrong!). So it is sealed, but not to the degree of those on the list.

Does it need to be a certain UV filter or any?

Understood!

Odd though that Canon doesn't list the 17-40 L in their sub-list of compatible models...perhaps just a "house-keeping" issue on their part?

Would it be fair to say the following?

Highly Dust and Water resistant Lenses

- EF300mm f/2.8L USM
- EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
- EF 500mm f/4L IS USM
- EF 600mm f/4L IS USM

Moderate Dust and Water Resistant Lenses

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM (external link)

Cheers!

Directly from Canon's website in the description of the 70-200 f/4 IS. Not only do they say it is, but they use your pet peeve term of water-proof :):

The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a lightweight, compact L Series telephoto zoom lens with Image Stabilizer. The optical Image Stabilization in the new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens provides up to an incredible four stops of shake correction-a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements provides excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. These features, together with its water-and dust-proof construction, provide both the performance and portability to meet user demands.

17-40 f4 does have the rubber gasket around the mounting ring.
I would say the list on the US Canon website is just not upto date. It doesn't menition the 200 F2 either...

Hmmm... I read someone else say that it did not have the gasket, thank you for the clarification. Given that you own it, I am guessing you would know.

I can understand the 200 f/2 or 800 f/5.6 not being on the list yet, but it seems odd that they wouldn't have updated that web page for the last 5 years....

Actually, it is the term "weather sealing" that drives me nuts.... ;)

And that is mostly when people say that filters "complete the weather sealing" of L lenses.

For what, to keep finger prints off of your front element?

It says the 24-105L is dust and water resistant as well. I'm thinking that MOST of the L lens are, with a few exceptions.

Anything that was designed after 1999 is, according to most sources. The DWR sealing is actually fairly complicated, so a complete re-designed of older models would be required, which is why they haven't incorporated it into all L lenses now being manufactured.

I'm going to call the list on Canon USA's website completely useless now.

It is correct, but obviously doesn't incorporate any L lens introduced in the last about 5 years.

I think I have to agree with you.

We should be able to have a current and readily available list for the lenses. There shouldn't have to be this level and length of debate about this issue. I was expecting to have my original question answered in pretty short order here, not for it to turn into a multi-page thread!

Thanks for all your efforts!

Cheers!

The 50L should also be on the list.

Which Canon lenses are weather sealed and to what degree can you expose them to moisture?

I've been entertaining the idea of picking up a used 1Ds Mk II and am curious which lenses will have the same weather sealed design? I own a few decent L lens now but don't know if any of them are weather sealed.

Cheers!
