In the second one you had your exposure compensation set to -0.67EV, but I still can't for the life of me figure out why your camera would choose 1/8000 as an appropriate shutter speed. Changing your metering mode from partial to spot may have helped some.

Your biggest problem may be that 70-200's are known to malfunction if they haven't shot ducks first. Canon tried to solve the problem with a limited edition box, but found they had to be live ducks. They're still fighting PETA on the shipping logistics for that one.

Both of you gave some great advise :) .

Im not really messing with any post processing yet. I am trying to take a good picture that needs little PP when done. I know, I got a long way to go lol. It is OK though, Im only taking pictures right now to get better, not to keep them (although I will keep some to laugh at when I get better).

Thanks for the tip Y'all, I will use them today!

Now there's a great idea! I'm going to start a folder for all my 'best' crap shots. I was going through and deleting a few of the really awful ones...but I'm thinking that could be really good for reference.

I also think of a sort of triangle too. But I think of it as a fraction.....x/y = z. Change one and it effects the others. You just have to pick which one is the most important to you to get it as close to that point as possible.

I love POTN. *heart*

griptape, I think I had everything so screwed up by changing this or that is probably why it was at that setting lol.

I tried a picture of my car this time. I tried to remember all the advise I had been given.

I will just post it here instead of making a whole new thread. It is just in my yard, so the scenery is not very good, but it works for practice.

The images are still very underexposed. Here is an example of one of your car shots with a bit better exposure.

I have been reading and I think I understand what is happening. With the bright sun and different shades around, I must be locking my AE on a spot that is darker. So if I lock it on a brighter spot, then go back to the subject, I should get a better exposer.

This is all a guess of course :)

It is just the opposite of that. On my XTi, I hold down the Av button next to the LCD viewing screen and then roll the thumbwheel.

I figured that the 40D might be different. If you check the owner's manual under exposure bias compensation or something similar, I think that you will find how to change it.

You're still in aperture priority. Your f stop is 3.2. Move it to about 11, then see where that bar ends up. Your shutter speed is 1/2500th, unless you want a really narrow depth of field.

Nice car!!

Go to page 93 of your owners manual.

Oh darn, I didn't have my switch pushed up one past the on position, oops. I read the manual, but I had so much to take in at once, I guess I did not retain that part :) .

Thanks bro!!

Haha, I am born but only half raised in Mississippi. I actually grew up in japan (military brat) and moved back to Ms. when I was about 16-18, then went to Florida for the next 10 years for school and play, then ended back in Ms. I never even went duck hunting, only deer. I do feel like a moron not knowing that was not a duck :) .

I feel pretty good about todays shoots! I am up at 0400hrs waiting for the sun to come up so I can practice the new stuff I have learned!!
