I've done some checking but found not a lot. I'm wondering if i can change/adapt the flash shoe to use on my 5D? Limited to manual if I do or not going to happen?

I've hardly used the flash and normally shoot in available light so am at a little bit of a loss. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

The Metz 54MZ simply needs the 3102 M3 SCA3000 controller module for Canon compatability, replacing the Metz 3402 module for Nikon compatability

Over my head but I can research it, thanks! Will this give me the full function of the flash on the 5D?

The Metz 3102 M3 module provides full ETTL functionality, equivalent to Canon 580EX (except Metz wireless mode is not directly compatible with Canon wireless flash.

The 3402 module is the lower part of the flash that has the flash foot integrated; it slides off after releasing the catch which is behind the door on the back of the module. The entire lower part comes off of the Metz 54MZ-4, and yours has the module number for Nikon on the side of the module

I did a google search for "3102 M3 SCA3000 controller module" and had only one hit and that was on this forum in a previous thread! Any suggestions on where I could get the flash changed over?

In fact, Wilt was the only hit!

Sorry to be so uninformed on this subject and also not knowing where to have the flash surgery done but I'm about 300 miles from the nearest civilization that has anything close to a camera repair shop.

YOU DO NOT NEED FLASH SURGERY! You can buy the 3102 module from B&H for $87, merely Google 'Metz 3102'
You can remove the Nikon module by opening the flip cover at the back of the module (the fingernail indentation is at the lower right side of the module body near the flash foot). Opening the door you will see a little latch at the junction of the 54MZ body and the module, just above the exposure compensation switch. Depress the latch toward the 54MZ body (upward) and the module slides back and comes out in your hand. Installation is merely sliding the desired module into place until the latch catches!

Bogen used to have a deal where you could trade in a flash towards a newer one. if that's still the case i'd check into upgrading to the 58 AF 1-c.

The 58AF is a dedicated flash that cannot ever be converted to compatability with another brand of flash. The 54MZ are convertible (just got finished telling someone how to convert from Nikon compatibility to Canon compatability) and with the 58AF your only choice is to sell it and buy over!
