I don't think it is a dumb question. To quote my mom, "There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers".

Your mom was better than mine. Mine told me "There are no dumb questions, just dumb people, now leave me alone and go ride your bike on the highway. You do know between those yellow lines is the bike lane...Now go play!"

I have to ditto what jra said. Find out what type images they expect. capture them and then also capture my ideas as the shoot goes along. Usually their ideas are better than mine ;)

I'm glad the info is helpful - but you still haven't told us what it is you do ?

Take some for you....that have your artistic touch.
Take most for her. She is paying the bill. You may find you like the way things work out.
Far more difficult is the client that blames you because her child has the attention span of a butterfly. With mom standing behind you yelling, Betty, Betty, Betty, Betty, Betty, look at me, look at me, look at me. Well...the kid did look at her and never at the camera. I didn't have one shot with the child looking at the camera. The child was so mobile that I had to shoot handheld (harder to see the eyes). This was during a team sports shoot with all the other moms and kids waiting. Mom was later disappointed that there were no shots of her girl looking at the camera and of course just complained to the group and not to me. Fortunately, I heard how "unhappy" she was and adjusted her kid's eyes in photoshop and sent her a print "on me".
Sorry...I'm rambling. You never know what you will run into. Still...that's what I like about it. While all the above was happening, I was totally amused (on the inside). It really was hilarious! Like trying to shoot Bugs Bunny!
Give them what they want...they will remember you and will come to trust you. I have clients now that say, "pick the best one, I trust you".

Thank you for that! You have a great sense of humor, I'm not sure if I would have been laughing on the inside! I am constantly chasing my 2 YO daughter around with the camera-and most times I end up really frustrated with her! Her smile seems to disappear the moment my camera appears! Anyway, thank you for the advice, I really do appreciate you taking the time!

The easiest way to catch a horse is to lie down in it's pasture. After a short time, it will walk over and sniff you.
