Am I going to miss my 70-200 f/4L IS?

It's a great lens, but I find myself falling in love with the wider angle stuff, portraits and available light... I've been thinking about selling and putting the funds towards the purchase of some/all of the following - Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, Sigma 30/50 f/1.4, Canon 85 1.8.

I can see myself using the 70-200 on a trip to the zoo or something, but that's once-a-year territory. Since a family wedding 3 months ago, I've only uploaded 4 pics taken with the 70-200 to Flickr. Ouch.

Has anyone else walked away from their 70-200 and not regretted it? Or am I just going to end up buying another one sometime in the near future?

Sounds to me like you just don't like having a lens laying around that isn't getting used. Nothing wrong with that. One good thing about this hobby is that good lenses hold their value very well and you can buy & sell at your convenience.

You already have the 50/1.8. Do you need to upgrade it to the 50/1.4?

The 85/1.8 certainly isn't wider than the 70-200, so I don't understand why you even mention that one.

The 30mm might benefit you, but the 17-40 already covers that range unless you just want the faster aperture.

The 11-16 looks like your only reasonable choice if you really do want to go wider. Then again, you could just sell the lens that you don't use and save the money for later when there is a specific item that you want.

I thought about selling mine but can't bring myself to sell on Lens to buy another LOL. Can't help but think of the times I may need it and have to start the process over again.

I'd keep it. That lens is awesome (I have tried it on many occasion and love it - I have a friend who owns it you see) and I plan to get one one day. But then, I prefer the long end to the short.

If I were YOU I'd go crazy and get the 11-16 AND keep the lens.

Keep the lens and rent the 100-400 for the race... You can always buy it later if your sure that's what you really want...

Keep it. I've sold a total of 6 lenses over the years. 5 of them was because I switched from Nikon to Canon. The 6th lens was a 17-55 because I switched from a 40D to 5D.

If you sell it, you'll probably end up buying it later. If you don't find the 17-40 wide enough, then the Tokina would benefit you the most out of the lenses you mentioned.

Sold mind like a fool. Bought another one. As long as I have canon equipment, I will never sell that lens, never.

I'm kind of in the same position. bought a 70-200 f4LIS, then bought a 100-400 for length.

I already have a 24-105f4LIS, so I'm thinking I could sell the 70-200 as I don't really need the length. I could probalby manage with 105mm and some zooming with my feet if necessary.

only thing stopping me is the fact that the 70-200 is so light I'll probably take it everywhere, whereas the 100-400 requires thought to bring along.

anyone here have both lenses?

That lens value and quality might last for half a life time.

When was the last time you used your car/home/life insurance? But you still have it right? For when you need it? The same could be said about your 70-200. I for one, will not sell mine (non-IS), unless I upgrade to the IS version.

If I was going to travel, I'd probably carry that lens along with a 24-70 2.8 because it just isn't that heavy. I do have the 2.8 verson of the 70-200 and it's my favorite lens but for exterior work unnecessary but I love it for portrait stuff so it gets used a lot.

I'd keep that one. I'm still thinking that if I can really justify the cost I'll have both the 2.8 IS and 4 IS versions.

If you don't use that range often, you might be better served selling it, purchasing the EF-s 55-250 IS for those rare times you DO need a telezoom, and use the other $700 for areas where you need it.

People thought I was nuts when I sold my 135L, but I just didn't use it much. I've never really missed it.

I have a similar line-up as yours, except that I'm waiting for the right moment for the FF. I don't use my 70-200 that often, but when I do I can't imagine selling it! Don't do it, you'll probably regret. If you have 2 cameras, 70-200 makes nice candid shots (even if you don't get 2.8, 4 does a decent job).

That makes a lot of sense if you do not use the range much.
