August 19th will bring my hubby and I our second little boy. We're having another c-section (medically necessary...:( ) It's been a rough ride so far with me being hospitalized twice for preterm contractions and being on drugs to stop them for over 2 months now. I am hoping to get off the meds bt the end of the month and if things start happening after then, well, it's c-section time. :D

In light of that fact, and my general anxiety about what to name the little guy (and my husband's refusal to express any interes in the process other than to suggest stupid names to just piss me off) I need some opinions. So, here are the facts.

Our first son is named Aidan Konnor Austin. His first name is Gaelic so I wanted to stick with a name of Gaelic origin that for the new baby. If we decide to have another baby in the future and have a girl, her name will start with an A as well. I also wanted the first name to end in N.

I am also wanting to have an interesting meaning for the names. Aidan was well named as his first name means "firey spirit" and his middle name means "one who is strong willed" and believe me, he fits those to a T.

So here's some info about my choices.

#1. Ian Michael Austin
-I like the way this sounds but the meanings are kind of blah to me.
-Ian: God is gracious, Michael: Who is like God?

#2. Alan Reilly Austin
-I like the meanings better but this one is a recent choice.
-Alan: (also german in addition to Gaelic-german meaning: one who is precious) handsome, resembling a little rock (so this one makes me smile as my husband's nickname-in our small town where everyone has a nickname-is Rock)
-Reilly: an outgoing man

So, please feel free to offer any opinions. :D

And, here's the most recent ultrasound of the little one (I've had three already )

I chose Alan. Doesn't have the potential for mis-pronunciation and spelling. But I don't think you'll make a bad choice either way. Kids generally grow into their names... Thank goodness I know a little girl named Ozzyona.

Let's see...your first child is AKA
and now you are wondering about IMA or ARA
Both better than ERA...
Ian goes better with Aidan

Well I'm an Ian fan! I also think Aidan and Ian sound good together. He must be getting close to arrival if you're honing in on a name, what does Corey think? My wife picked Ian, and I picked Mitchell (as a middle name) I think the name works well for a boy.

both are good Tiff. but I have to choose IMA over AMA. Ian and Aidan do go very well together, but so do AKA and AMA... so I guess you might as well flip a coin if those are the only options you see.

the little one looks great there :D what lens was used in that shot?

Me too. Although I am toying with Ian Reilly now. The only thing stopping me there is that IRA would be the initals and ira is the Spanish word for wrath or rage.

The fact that your little guy's name is so similar is a reason I've kept looking for alternatives. I didn't intentionally mean them to be so close and when I realized what your wee one's name was I started looking for alternatives. Corey doesn't give me any opinions at all. He just insists the name will be "Dirk Garvey" which he thinks is funny because it's the name of a guy in town and Corey's group of buddies always jokes about that name. He pretty much told me to give him some options and he'd approve my approval. That's what happened with Aidan. I picked the name and he said ok.

LOL Tiff! Definitely don't base the name of your wee one on what my wife came up to name my kid.

Ian Michael is much different than Ian Mitchell!
And your kid would be a IMA and "A" comes before "B"
My kid is a IMB

To many people call him "I"an and I have to correct and say "E"an. But the name suits my guy well and I wouldn't think of calling him anything else but monkey boy.

I voted for Alan. Two reasons:

1) Easier to get right on the first pronounciation. Everyone knows how to say Alan. Plus, kids with odd names get picked on by others. "Ian" is odd to me, at least.

2) The initials are better. "ARA" is nothing. However, "IMA" can be constructed as "I'm A..." which may not be nice for a young boy. "I'm a what, Ian?"

I like to pick names that work and all, but I have to think of how the kids will be stuck with what I do.

Too funny. I don't know HOW people could mis-pronounce that one. And the monkey boy thing makes me laugh because I call Aidan monkey butt. I think we must have some weird badger telepathic connection going on.....;)

Maybe I could just spell it "Ean"

Yeah, the "Im a...." thing had me thinking as well as "peein' Ian." I couldn't think of anything bad from the second choice.

As for being unusual, if my hubby didn't balk at it, I think we're ok. He has vetoed several others that I liked based on them being too weird or the spelling being too weird.

If I could play with those names a little and make it Alan Michael Austin? The meanings of those put together is kind of nice too. But, to stick with your two choices I would go for Alan Reilly.
