I already have a lowepro computrekker that I use to put all my camera gear and laptop when I travel. The backpack is great, but sometimes I want to carry light....and I use this mainly to carry my camera gear.

I currently have a separate messenger laptop bag to carry my 14 inch Dell laptop. However, I'm looking to replace that with a backpack (easier on the back). I want the smallest possible laptop/camera bag. I will use the backpack to mainly carry my laptop for everyday use, and then carry my camera when needed to.

I know there is the lowepro fastpack 250 out there. but that backpack acutally look pretty big. is there any alternative backpack out there that is smaller? Again, the main purpose of the backpack is to carry my laptop.

Any suggestion will be great! Thanks!

I have the non-laptop version (102) of the Kata R-102/103 backpack. I love it. I would consider it to be on the smaller side, and it is very comfortable to wear. I wore it pretty much fully loaded around FL and GA in 95F heat and it was very comfortable, keeps the backpack off of your back to allow airflow between the pack and your back. It even has a "built in" camera strap that attaches to the should straps which makes carrying a camera all day long much nicer. I wear the backpack even when I know I will not be changing lenses just for that.

Here is a thread on the R-102.

I really enjoy the lowepro compuday pack, but sometimes wish it had a bit more room for gear. Its my "personal item" bag when I travel via plane, and fits well under the seat.

I like the Crumpler Whickey and Cox - not sure if its name changes between countries, some of them do. Opens from the back only so your equipment is more secure and it doesn't look like your regular camera bag (though now every man and his dog has a Crumpler now it seems) and it's particularly comfortable to wear.

Although not rated as a camera backpack, I have traveled with a Northface that carried a laptop, 3 lenses and a body, a flash and extra goop. Not as expensive as a Lowepro, and just as useful otherwise. I carried the lenses in their pouches/softcase, and bought some velcro padded wraps for the body and the inside of the backpack.

I recently purchased a Tarmac Adventure 9 (http://www.tamrac.com/5549.htm (external link)) and have been impressed with its size and storage capacity so far. Plenty of room for what I envision to be a rapidly-expanding lens selection. :)

I also second the Kata R-103.
It will fit all your gear, and had a laptop compartment.
What I also like about the bag is that it seems to cause no trouble at airports :)

Have used it too for almost two years now and build-quality is very good. Have space for a flash, body with mounted lens (17-85mm), macro 60mm, 70-300mm, MD80 (MD=Media Storage 80 GB) and finally a remote control.
Top compartment is used for pc-cables whenever needed or a lunchpack.
Good bag, but it is full with my setup!

Save the camera and motive, the photographer is already disabled!
