So i take my camera apart (remove accessories) about once a week for cleaning. Well last week when i put the grip back on i heard/felt something odd when i was tightening it, like a snap.....

Well The plastic gear piece that you turn to loosen/tighten the grip is extremely hard to spin and when it does spin, it feels like its slipping.....

OH NO'sssss, So i think i over tighten and now the plastic gear is slipping inside. I did some research and i found out a couple ppl had this problem..

What sucks is my camera was just at canon TWICE!!!!! They didnt fix my err99 the first time i sent it to them, so i had to send it back. Now this!!!!

This is really frustrating, and i'm leaving on vacation in a week.

The screw right now is loss, im going to try and just get it tight and deal with it until i get back.

This really sucks..

That's a fairly common problem with the BG-E2 I've heard.

I know when I get my BG-E2 I'm sure as hell going to pop it open and reinforce that gear.

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.

remove it if you can
and replace the broken part

if you grind more teeth on the gear while its on...it is very hard to remove

the grip on my 300d is stuck to the body unless i do some hacking

I thought i had it tight, but i moved the gear just a litlte and it came loss.

It seems like its stuck in the middle, i cant tighten it completely or take it off.

My fingers are starting to hurt hahaha, gonna try with towel i have laying around.

The grip isn't on tight, its loos.

I dust/clean my camera once a week, at which point i take the grip off along with everything else that can be removed. I think when ever i get it back the grip wont be coming off as often and ill pay attention when tightening

They apply a liberal dose of your $$.;) I've heard of them fixing it for free, and heard of them charging $58 to fix it. Don't know what it depends on.

I over nighted my camera to canon on 7/24/08, so they got it On friday.
They removed the grip then repaired it, free of charge (both camera & Grip were less then 1 year old).
They also shipped it back express, for no extra charge.
I got my camera back 7/31/08. so i got my camera back with 4-5 business days.

I'm pretty happy, hopefully i don't run into any more problems. This is the 3rd time ive sent my camera to canon in the past 2 months.

Similar problem for me.....The wheel on mine was just spinning after it was tight for awhile. So after a few sore fingers I was able to get it off my 40D, but in the process I think...no, I know I stripped the gear on the underside of the wheel. A bunch of small pieces of black plastic came out when I took it apart. There aren't any grooves to engage the gears that turn the threads.

You'd think for something that costs $190 would be engineered better. Metal gears working against a plastic gear..the wheel should not me made of plastic.

I bought this 5 mo. ago, so will call and see about getting it repaired...maybe they'll do it for free...hell, if they'd just send me a new wheel, I'd do it myself.

I think they do it for free, it's a known problem. They replace it with a metal gear IIRC.

If not, you can order the parts for it from Canon Parts hotline and then pull the grip apart and do it yourself.

It's not if this happened to you. Those that have seen the inside of the grip can relate.;)
