I'm looking to upgrade my compact flash card to 16 Gig and want to know where I can buy a quality Sandisk 16 Gig III or IV card for use with my 1Ds. Also, I want to upgrade the secondary back up card to a 8 Gig or 16 Gig card. How much for both and where can I buy these cards below market value?

I would be reluctant to use such a large card. "Putting all your eggs in one basket" springs to mind.

NightAngel,

Thanks for the information on fake sandisk cards. I was unware of this information, but will keep my eyes open. Andy_cam, I need a 16 Gig or something larger to shoot my next all day event. I would like to pick up something larger than 8 Gigs. Perhaps a 12Gig card would work if it's geniune.

Lots of shooters do all day events and manage to successfully swap cards....It only takes seconds to do...even at fast paced events, there is time to swap a card or two.

I bought four Sandisk Extreme 8GB Ducati Edition for my Canon EOS 40D. I'm really satisfied. Performance : 45mb/s (important for me).

I have no idea why everyone cringes at larger cards. I've been very happy with my 16GB Sandisk Extreme III card. I bought it at B&H for $200, but at the time there was a Sandisk rebate of like $90 I think it was. Sandisk seems to enjoy playing the rebate game unfortunately. The main thing I've noticed is simply that the prices fluctuate quite a lot. I'd stick to buying from one of the major stores though, as there are obviously a lot of knock-offs on eBay and such.

Regarding the "eggs in one basket" folks, I'm typically shooting weekend events. Not ever having to worry about running out of room on my card is lovely. If it ever failed, I'd shrug and move on to the next weekend. If I was shooting someone's wedding I might be a bit more paranoid. And in any case, I've yet to ever have a CompactFlash card fail on me in five years of using them now (from 512MB sizes through 16GB now).

I prefer not to swap cards once I start shooting any event. This is just my shooting technique.

It's an odd technique and really, sure whatever. Never the less, it's a IDs so eggs in a basket doesn't work there because of the size of each photos is much larger than normal.

16GB card would hold 1600 photos +/- on a 20D being 8mp. The 1Ds MkII is 16mp right, double that of the 20D. Therefore would hold only 800 photos, not that many really and a 4GB card would seem like what a 2GB is to smaller MP camera users.

Still, sure swapping can suck, but still, it's not a big deal.

Just be sure you've updated your firmware to the absolute latest to get support for in-camera formatting of cards over 8 GB.

I'd rather rely on one quality card than a bunch of marginal ones. You risk a more significant loss going with one card but you're also more LIKELY to have a failure with the more cards you use. I bought a 16G Extreme 3 a few weeks ago and I'm running it through its paces with casual stuff before I take it on any serious jobs. So far so good.

1250 shots in RAW on the 40D.

People use to say that at 512 megs... then a gig... then 2... and so on...

And those that use multiple cards to prevent this egg in one basket scenario, what do they do with these multiple cards? Right, they keep them together! In the same bag, or pocket, where nothing could ever happen!
Doesn't matter how many cards you're using, you're eventually keeping them all together. You're reducing risks in one way (at least this is what you tell yourself) and then ignoring any other potential risks, which are all as likely (or unlikely) to happen...

Here is the latest rebate from SanDisk, posted from the B&H website...

I like the 16GB Extreme III 30mbs cards. I can store about 500 1Ds3 high ISO RAW files. The 8GB cards are fine for my smaller capacity cameras.

I hate swapping cards on the fly. I haven't run dry while shooting an event without noticing but I've come close a few times.

I have had one card fail in over five years shooting digital, but that was clearly my fault, having pulled it out of the card reader without properly ejecting it first. Sandisk's recovery software saved every picture on the card and then some.

Right now, I have only 8gb Extreme IV or Lexar 8gb UDMA cards. I wouldn't hesitate to buy larger when they come in extreme speeds. But I'd only buy from a reliable source such as B&H or Adorama, etc.
